Homosexuals smarter than average?

I've seen more than one study now that places homosexuals almost 15 points higher in IQ than the accepted average (95-105). I know you'd love me to post the studies but I'm not going to do that because it would derail the thread immediately since those same studies tend to paint other groups in a bad light.

So, any theories as to why this is? I'm accepting it as face value because the homosexual population does indeed seem better educated and more articulate than average.

The studies are there if you want to go find them. I'm being truthful about why I'm not linking to them.

Denser BSTc masses :D

*giggle*

While I can't look at an IQ score and consider it without knowing a few things about the measure (the test used, for example), I can look at some of the other things that are seaprate from that score you noted.

In general, gays are better educated because they usually focus less on social interaction and more on defensive withdrawal during critical learning phases.

The various plateaus that exist in learning stages tend to coincide with an increase in gender based separation and awareness, and, much like people who are confined for whatever reasons, they tend to focus more on the outside world -- perhaps in a less conscious attempt at finding some sort of meaning or explanation for their differences from their peers.

GLBT people, in general, tend to spend more time in school than straight peple overall, as well -- they expand their range of interests.

Then there is their need for defensive knowledge, lol.

As for articulate, there are studies showing that gay men are more articulate than het men and gay women are less articulate than het women. Why is apparetly related to brain function in some way.(i didn't pay close attention to the studies)

oh -- and schmitty, I note, is oviously another slave to the rule of screwing.

So sad, really.

I think we are smarter because we feel the need, as children to compensate for our thinking that who we are sexually, is not the norm. I think, or should say I have tried to excell in things I probably would not have had I not been challenged by what society considers normal.

I don't know that one can force themselves or train themselves to increase their level of intellect.

Even if average students study hard and put in a lot of time in order to make good grades, there are always those who simply learn faster and without nearly as much effort. I would assume they did nothing to create that scenario, they were just born smart, probably inherited from one or both parents.

Of course, I'm just guessing. I have not studied this.

That said, I was smart long before any reference to sexuality could have been made. In kindergarten, in a Catholic school where there was no "gifted" or "advanced" program, they used to send me to the first grade class a few times each week in order to attempt to challenge me. Alas, first grade math was just as boring as kindergarten, and it was just another reason to be harrassed and teased.

Anecdotally, it does appear to me that gay people are generally smarter. However I do know some absolutely dumb gay people as well.

I lean towards something of this nature as an explanation as well. My theory is that gay people are forced very early to realize they're different from almost everyone else, and that difference forces them to start asking 'why'.

And in my opinion, few things affect IQ and overall intelligence more than a burning need to know 'why'.

Of course, it should be obvious by my theory that I'm not one of those people who believe IQ is completely genetic and never changes. If you read the studies I'm talking about, it becomes evident that personal experience and environment also play a hand in it.

We may be seeing a spurious correlation here.

It may be that teh segment of the homosexual population that comes out, and self-iedntifies as gay, is the segment of that population that has "higher intelligence." Certainly, there is a correlation between intelligence and higher education/training, which translates into financial independence and social/geographic mobility. It is these factors which influence our ability to cut social ties and reform them, and to become independent enough to declare our homosexuality.

So, there might be a strong correlation between homosexuals who are less educated, less financially successful, and less socially mobile - and the closet. These closeted homosexuals will not be counted when we survey the "intelligence" of homosexuals.

This is a pertinent point for the gay community. What responsibility to we, as a community, have for these individuals who, for whatever reason, choose not to identify as gay?

I was curious. No sexual correlation.

"On theWeschler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), Willmott and Bri-erley (1984) found that gay men scored higher than heterosex-ualmenandwomenontheV erbalIQsubscale(andlowerthanhe terosexual men, but equal to heterosexual women, on thePerformance IQ subscale; there were no differences in Full-Scale IQ). Sanders and Wright (1997) reported higher verbalthan performance IQ in homosexual men compared to hetero-sexualmen(again,nodiffe rentfromwomenandnodifferencesi nFull-ScaleIQ).Onestudyinadult s(usingtheWAIS)reportedno differences in IQ performance (Tuttle & Pillard,1991).Finally,onestudy infeminineboysusedtheWechslerP reschoolandPrimaryScaleofIntel ligence (WPPSI)ortheWechslerIntelligen ce Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), dependingon the childÂ’s age, and reported no differences in Full-Scale IQperformance(Finegan,Zucker,B radley,&Doering,1982). Our voting rate is deplorable and that speaks volumes about the intelligence about most in the gay community.

When I say "our" I am not refering to those of us here who post as we are bit more political than most but again a community with a low voting percentage is not an intelligent community.

If homosexuals are generally more intelligent than average, I have never noticed it in all honesty. They often think they are and there is a tendency to call anybody that does not agree with them uneducated and unintelligent. This in itself is an emotional response and is not an intelligent one. This response comes from many different quarters (not just homosexuals), as many dogmatically think they are correct and therefore they consider anybody that disagress must be stupid.

Not true. A community that does not vote is one that has no confidence in their government.

I can only speak for myself, but I only call people uneducated when they really are just that. When they ignore the facts and decide to believe made up claims, I call them uneducated. When they don't know the difference between your and you're, there, they're and their, it's and its, and so on, I call them uneducated. When they lack basic knowledge and logistic abilities, along with common sense, ten I call them uneducated.

One who are educated tend to be a lot more accepting and understanding, which is why those who scream insults and lies from the start are said to e uneducated. Another sign of the lack of a proper education is when people use religion as an excuse to discriminate and say "God hates gays so I should hate them."

Any person who makes generalizations like that is even less so.

Tchaikovsky.
Julius Ceasar.
Voltaire.
Shakespeare.
Alexander the Great.
Your dad.
Just kidding. But you get the point. Military, musical, philisophical geniuses.

You forgot Leonardo Da Vinci.
He was bisexual and enjoyed cross-dressing.
You know, no one actually knows for sure who the Mona Lisa painting is of. Some experts even say it could be a self portrait of Da Vinci himself in women's clothing.
