Catholic bishops are not known for bucking the head man. Nice words from the Pope, but his institution spends a good deal of money on anti-gay political positions, discriminating against women, and covering up pedophilia. The Church talks about religious liberty for an institution, but is solidly against individual religious liberty. I'm just not feeling the love. I'm wondering if Quinn is welcome at Holy Communion. She wouldn't be in these parts.

It will take a long time to change the direction of the entire Roman Catholic hierarchy. We shall see what small, subtle steps the Pope makes.

The prior two Pope's anti-gay steps were anything but subtle. Twenty years ago, we could have envisioned an American clergy that downplayed the teachings on homosexuality and was more concerned with inequality, poverty, social injustice, and lack of opportunity. Moderate bishops who expressed greater concern over those traditional Christian issues have been sidelined and reined in by the Vatican.

The new Pope appears to elevate the issues of social justice and de-emphasize losing sex issues--homosexuality, contraception, artificial insemination, etc. Watch closely to see if his actions align with his rhetoric. You will have to watch closely, though. There will be no sudden rewriting of doctrine nor mass replacement of the old, ossified guard.

Anything that is aimed at eliminating bigotry is to be commended ; for those who believe in the supernatural they are words issuing from saintly lips ; for others they're simply the words of a well-meaning , civilized fellow who deplores strife and disorder .

It is welcome news to hear any pope say something not negative about gays and lesbians.
