An instrument of oppression. Nothing more.

Russia has a LONG history of writing and interpreting it's laws to facilitate the repression, persecution, ostracism, imprisonment and even murder of anyone the power structure wishes.

In this case, even to tweet with another gay person or activist outside of Russia makes one "a spy".

Things are quickly moving toward a condition wherein "We don't want you here, we won't allow you to communicate with the outside in order to leave, we might as well imprison you and kill you there." You're not allowed to disapprove. You're not allowed to leave.

Russia has a long history of just this sort of thinking.

In the US if you give money to the wrong charity you're guilty of aiding turrurism. And you have to register here, too, if you lobby on behalf of or represent a foreign country. Further, the US and other Western countries use NGOs to undermine competitors' governments.

No doubt Russia is anti lgbt and oligarchical and dismal, but on this score the laws are not so different from those in the US.

"Other groups have been taken to court by government officials for failing to register voluntarily under a 2012 law, which requires non-government organizations who receive funding from other countries to call themselves 'foreign agents.'"

It has yet to be shown that gay people in Russia are receiving any funds from foreign governments. If only outside groups or organizations are the necessary criteria, what about news media? foreign business representatives? clerics?

Please cite one case where a U.S. Citizen has been indicted for giving money to ANY U.S.-based organization whatsoever.

It's not even close to being parallel.

Ah, yes. And Russia had nothing to do with the shooting down of Malaysian Flight 17 as well. I'm sure Russians NEVER lie. Like Biden said, Russia is a gas station masquerading as a country.

Just out of curiosity, I Googled "Putin a great leader". I found it interesting the number of prominent people in the U.S. who thought he was/is. Give it a try. It's very telling.

Especially when we're discriminated against....we hire lawyers and file lawsuits. We know you bigots are having temper tantrums because you can't get away with discrimination anymore. LOL!

You seem mixed up by a nationalistic zeal in forgetting, oh, tiny lies from the US concerning Iraq, Vietnam, Grenada, a century of invasion and torturing in Latin America, and so on. So you're irrational from the getgo.

You'll be the last one to ever look at all these mysterious incidents involving commercial airliners and the US over the decades.

Everything I said was correct about non lgbt groups in Russia facing the same requirements as the lgbt ones, Western funding of NGOs in "enemy" countries as virtual front organizations, similar requirements in the US (and not only for "foreign" charities.)

Then I said that Russia is undoubtedly more dismal. But that isn't good enough for reflexive, denying nationalists. Facts don't matter. It's not just a fundie problem. It's a US populace and education and ideology problem.

There are definite similarities, starting with Russia defining various NGOs which would appear to be nominally based in Russia as being "foreign" and with the US defining various charities which would appear to be nominally based in the US as "foreign."

Just because it's called the OFCA doesn't mean anything, and the US laws against donating to _any_ charity which appears on a US terror watchlist are quite clear, wherever that charity happens to be located. Of course if the nominally Turkish charity which funded that shipment to Gaza that got boarded and shot up by the Israelis had been a US charity it simply would have been shut down. Because it's officially "terrorist."

So you proviso of "US based organization" is a semantic dodge.(I bet clear cut, non semantic, cases exist, but I will search later...I doubt you genuinely know anything about this area.)
