They're Baaack: Phelps Clan Picket Funerals of High Schoolers

Nov 1, 2008 | Posted by: StevenFL | Full story: www.edgeboston.com

The Westboro Baptist Church led by Fred Phelps has announced that the funerals of high school and college students killed in tragic circumstances will be targeted for picketing by the group. The funerals are scheduled to take place in several different states. Three separate news releases issued by the church announced the Topeka, Kansas-based congregationís plans. The group plans to travel to Arkansas to picket at the funeral of two University of Central Arkansas students who were gunned down by a gunman on the schoolís campus. "God hates Arkansas," declares the announcement. Another service targeted by the group is the funeral for four cheerleaders who were students at a high school in Tennessee. The students died along with two other victims in an automobile accident.

My god, they have little humanity if they are protesting the deaths of high school kids and college kids. If I were the parents, I would move/change the funeral by a couple hours/miles. I know I wouldn't want to bury my kids with the Phelps near (though the families probably don't have enough to move/postpone)

Unfortunately the scriptures say God allows the rain to fall on the just and the unjust, I guess that fire is included. They have to live with their actions,that is probably why they are so miserable and cannot get it together!

You might as well ask: how can one explain the ignorance of a sizable portion of the American people? Gallup polling for the last 26 years has shown that between 40-50% of Americans think that man appeared in his present form less than 10,000 years ago. Only 40% believe in evolution. Huge portions believe in the literal truth of some "holy" collection of writings from thousand of years ago. We elect (or the electoral college elected) and then reelect a complete idiot as president for the past four years; the republicans nominate a manifestly unprepared nobody to be within a heartbeat of the presidency (keep in mind that 8 of our 43 presidents have died in office - 18.6%) and large numbers turn out to celebrate.

We look at the large crowds in Iran yelling "Death to America" and protests in other Middle Eastern countries and wonder how they can be so deluded by their false religions but we fail to look in the mirror and ask ourselves why we invade other countries as our president invokes the name of his god. We send our students to school, presumably to learn to think, but at home we fill their heads with myth and superstition and ideology unsupported and unsupportable by evidence and reason.

We are the largest producers and consumers of popular music, escapist movies, and "reality" TV; our population can read, but our newspapers are forced to write at the 8th grade level; we can't think logically but we have no problem opening our mouths and telling other countries what they should be doing; we celebrate free markets and capitalism but we are in debt up to our eyeballs; we consume more than we produce; we pollute more than we conserve; our students can't read, write, compute or think critically to world standards but they feel really good about themselves...

I don't know about the source of the evil of these people. But their insanity is inherited. It's even tax supported.

Ad $$$ is Ad $$$. The media generally do not edit nor exclude paid advertisers whether or not they agree with the general content of the message. As an acct executive at a major gay mag, we do not limit our advertisers, as long as they are legitimate and legal. "Yes On 8" is a legitimate group and they can advertise. That said, they are probabaly wasting their money and I would be willing to take that money so there is less for them to use effectively!

I don't know if they are insane or just evil but in either case I almost think there should be limits on their free speech rights...except that is such a slippery slope. I would not at all be surprised if they get some sort of physical response this time. Picketing soldiers is bad enough but now teenagers? Unconsciounable.

That may be the case. Since the article didn't mention it I was just curious. I figured it had something to do with somebody being gay.

You know... I have usually found that when someone is obsessed with homosexuality they are either exploiting other people's fear of it in order to pad their pockets (like Jerry Falwell) OR they have something to hide. Most of these people are in the same family, are they not? How sad it would be if Fred Phelps was really just so self-loathing because of being gay that he spread that internalized hatred throughout his family. I have seen it happen before but not to this extreme.

Whatever the reason... this whole group of people is so full of hatred that they are about to explode.

I truly believe that heaven will be void of all fundies and bigots. I am at the age now I dream of heaven with lefties that are not telling me what, how, when, and how often to think about something. Heaven will be a place where everyone is equal, and will be a place where we can look downward and see these God fearing Phelps family burning in Hell.

This is true about obsession. Check out http://conservapedia.com . If you click on "statistics" on the Help menu on the middle left hand side of the page you will see the "Most Viewed" subjects :

* Atheism (4,477,464)
* Main Page (3,754,532)
* Homosexuality (3,203,073)
* Barack Obama (648,654)
* Wikipedia (598,116)
* John McCain (546,585)
* Sarah Palin (504,830)
* Joseph Biden (492,121)
* United States Presidential Election, 2008 (490,763)
* Liberal (484,771)

Homosexuality used to be the top but I guess that this Elizabeth Dole campaign has pushed Atheism to the top. But where is the Economy? The wars? The failing Health Care? Unemployment? Are Atheism and Homosexuality more important issues to these? Why are they so obsessed with these issues?

BTW : Where the hell is Toby's Landing? I Googled it and got nothing!

It is indeed sad that people find so much more to concentrate on than things that should matter to them. And I saw a documentary on TV one time about Atheism in America. People who are openly Athsists often suffer the worst persecution of all. I was surprised at some of the stories these people told. And I saw Elizabeth Dole's despicable ad. Her opponent was at a meeting in the home of a well-known Atheist and suddenly she's being called one only because the Dole people thought that would hurt her...true or not (it's not, by the way. The woman is a Sunday School teacher and has belonged to the same church for years. It was just right-wing slander). "Athiest" is just another word like "liberal", "gay", "Muslim", "Jew", etc. and all their slang synonyms that people use to label other people for the purpose of tearing someone down. Supposedly in a free country there's nothing wrong with actually being any of these things. But unfortunately there are huge portions of the population that look down on one or more of these groups... hence, hatred and discrimination.

And to answer your BTW question, Toby's Landing is in Winston County on Smith Lake just west of Arley. Google won't find it because Toby is our dog and "Toby's Landing" is our place on the lake. Our area is unincorporated so we named it.

There are only about 85 members in that church, and I think some serious inbreeding has taken place. I cannot believe that grieving family members have to put up with these, for lack of a better term, demonics. What they do in the name of God is frightening and infuriating.

I have read that there are only about 15 members and that they are ALL related either by marriage or blood.

"SaveUsFromGOP", the reason that the Phelps Family Freakshow of Hate has chosen these particular funerals to bring their own very special touch of ugliness to, is that they are of course a ready made media event. The accident that took the lives of these two girls and the others, has generated a great deal of media coverage not only in Tennessee, but neighboring states as well and other than defending lawsuits against themselves (with one notable exception), the other thing the WBC is good at is self-promotion. They go where the cameras and the reporters are already waiting, they've been doing it for years.

When this travelling roadshow of mean and nasty was only "picketing" the funerals of AIDS victims and "gay events" they were just a little known hate group that wasn't getting the attention that they've always craved. Their goal has always been to get as many people to hear their message as possible, but if you've ever had the miserable experience of being anywhere near them up close and personal, you'd know just how tough of a sell that is to most media. Even when they showed up for the trial of Matthew Shepard's murderer, they were barely a backdrop to the media coverage. It was only when they hit on the sick concept of bringing their message from God to military funerals did they hit the media coverage jackpot. Now they just troll for other high profile funerals that are getting plenty of national or local media attention, annouce they are going to be there and then they just wait for the cameras to find them...

Fred and Margie had 10 kids, 7 of them are still associated with the church and along with their spouses and kids, they make up the bulk of the church membership which is believed to have about 45 members. There are also a couple of other families that are also members of the church. They also are believed to have sort of a fan club nationwide that are known to participate in some of their protests, but they aren't church members here in Kansas.

I've had more than my fair share of encounters with these human toxic wastes over the years and so I've gotten a little more familiar with them than I really care to. My first encounter with them was some twenty years ago at a funeral of a friend that passed away from AIDS and even now the ugliness that I saw that day is still fresh in my memory.

The WBC is little more than a personality cult centered around Fred, who is a notorious control freak and is known to have a temper that you really don't want to be on the wrong side of. His children and now their families just stick with him out of the intense fear of "God" and Fred he's beaten into them. The obsession with homosexuality stems from a suppossed "incident" (the details of which have always been rather vague) that happened to one of his sons in Gage Park in Topeka, which at the time was one of the city's more notorious cruising grounds. That, coupled with the loss of his law license around that time (he, believe it or not was a rather prominent civil rights attorney) apparrently sent him off the deep end of zealotry.

I HOPE they DO! Some parent wil blast them all to hell and then we'll have seen the last of them. Are they THAT stupid to picket the funeral of a CHILD? Do they have any idea what a parent of a deceased child will do?

Please phelps, do us all a favor. PICKET a funeral of a child! I want to watch your last breath as a slew of bullets enters you and your families bodies!
