This is the first I have heard of this. Now I foresee a fight about treatment and surgery on the government dime. Then a change to a women's prison. Wonder how all of it will turn out.

There was a good article written by Michael Wolff about this in USA TODAY (@MichaelWolffNYV and [email protected]), and it was published on August 12, 2013. It is an article about Manning being trans and not gay, and entitles: "Why tiptoe around the 'why'?"

So people have been aware of this for awhile.

I've known about it for about two years now, but since I didn't think that the Manning stuff was directly LGBT, I didn't post a lot of the stories about her here.

To me, a man that thinks he's a woman but is still attracted to men is just gay with a twist. Genitalia defines the sex of an individual, no matter what he or she thinks.

What a gawdawful mess. On everyone's part. Yes, the Army mishandled Manning, and their stupidity is inexcusable.

But on the other hand, Manning's conduct was criminal. To defend it, you'd have to assert that Manning was mentally or emotionally ill, and given the way our culture likes to stereotype, that's inevitably going to reflect poorly on the entire trans community. You'd also have to go back and argue that Don't Ask, Don't Tell should have been invoked in this case ... and I don't think anyone really wants to go there.

This situation is a lose-lose for everyone involved.

Actually that's NOT true........if Manning does transition's from Male to Female, then most likely she will still be attracted to women.

See one's sexual orientation DOESN'T change just because one's gender does!!!

If a man was attracted to women before transition to a woman, it is likely they will still be attracted to women.

If a woman was attracted to men before transition to a man, it is likely they will still be attracted to men.

At least this has been the experiences of people who are transgender!!!

This is a bad situation, made worse by those who defended Manning's actions just because he is gay. I was appalled at the "Free Bradley" banner in the Chicago Pride Parade this year. So what if he is gay, he released government information with no regard for the consequence. Glad he is sentenced to 35 years and I hope he gets little mention from now on.

I don't think Manning should have ever been allowed to enlist at all. He clearly has psychological problems, with some of them probably because he is trans. And from what I have read, he did exhibit very erratic and disturbing behavior sometimes during his enlistment.

Furthermore HOW could the military ALLOW suc a low-ranking person to have access at all to SO MUCH information ???!!!

Oh yeah. The Obamaniac said it's all: "BUSH'S FAULT !"

That may be true, but I haven't seen any of it in anything I have read on-line or in print. Either way, I'm not all that interested. I might note that I expected more responses about my comment about treatment on the government dime, but no one noticed, I guess.

Their gender doesn't change either. They only think it does.

The govt. is NOT obligated to pay for his transition and I but they don't. He will have to live as a male in Leavenworth. The prisoners will have a field day with him. EVERYDAY!

I've known a few male-to-female trans people over the years, who lived 24\7 a female but never had "the big slice". It's not necessary to have obviously.

No, and no trans person thinks it does either. Your gender is your brain's sex, and it's something you're born with. The problem is that one's brain sex doesn't always align with one's gonadal sex, which is why trans people transition.

So, you are correct that gender doesn't change.

You're so full of Bushit you can't think properly. How do you suppose President Obama was supposed to know about Manning's problems when, as the story indicates, Manning's superior did not pass along the information up the chain of command in an attempt to "protect" Manning?

Again, you're so anxious to antagonize ... well, everyone ... that you're willing to sacrifice your dignity in order to make a cheap-shot comment.

Let's continue our successful policy of ignoring one another. You disgust me, and given your sensibilities, I would hope the feeling is mutual.

Genitalia at the time of birth determines gender.

Sorry Wondering.......but that is NOT necessarily true.......the outside genitalia might say the child is a boy, but their internal wiring says I'm a girl........years go by and they get their gender changed on the outside to match how they have felt on the inside........now, both make sense to the person.

You are stuck on "if it's born with a pen!s it MUST be male".......and that's not always true......just ask anyone who was born with both genitalia!!!
