Seth MacFarlane Engages in Transphobia to Defend his Transphobia

Aug 12, 2010 Full story: www.womanist-musings.com 41

If you look up the term fauxgressive, I am quite sure MacFarlane's face would be front and center. He says all of the right bullshit, but when it is time for him to earn money, the man has no problem pushing every ism that he can think of. Some would say that he picks on everyone and that this therefore makes his television shows acceptable, but if you really study "The Cleveland Show" and "The Family Guy," you will notice that the people he seems to pick on the most, constitute the most marginalized in society. When marginalized people complain about the way they are portrayed on MacFarlane's shows, we are told that we are being to sensitive and that it is just a joke. Why take any of it seriously, they are after all just cartoon characters right?

MacFarlane recently gave an interview to Details magazine and in it he discussed the negative reaction of the GLBT community to his latest trans episode.

Of course the show was horribly offensive and disrespectful on all levels, but the man has been one of the most and few open in Hollywood to being gay supporting. The man makes fun of everyone, that is part of what makes the show funny, his offensiveness. Now this particular show wasn't at all funny, but that's what happens sometimes, you win or you lose with the attempts at crude humor. Also the end of the show had Brian and his dad making up, connecting and realizing that, differences aside, they were still family and loved each other. He makes fun of everyone, so I guess I'm just numb to these types of antics.

I know that the humour on this show is lower-class and slapstick, like the three stooges and married with children, but a pedophile character is weird.God only knows what kind of fan mail that show receives.

They WERE the greatest show on earth for the first several years, but have gotten sort of tired lately. I was their biggest fan in those days and still watch out of loyalty. It gets harder to do. The shows are overwrought and too cutesy now.
The animation has improved, but the stories have suffered.
I heard one of the voice actors on a talk show..I'm sorry..I forget his name..."Mr. Burns", and "Smithers" and "Principal Skinner" and HE said he is ashamed of the shows they are putting out, but he admits he likes the huge pay checks. He actually has gotten into trouble for his remarks, but he still stands by them.

If you take time to watch this episode of the show you will see that alot of the issues we face as trans folks, yeah alot of stuff was left out but for goddesses sake its a 30 min comedy cartoon, IT IS TO MAKE YOU LAUGH not teach issues to the american public. I am a MTF Transsexual in transition right now and i laughed through the entire episode (other then the Brian puking part, that was standard Family Guy, and it got taken to far) Family Guy in a nutshell is fart, penis, and other gross bodly parts and functions jokes, with a talking homicidal baby thrown in for good measure. This was not the first time the show has refrenced TS in the movie "Stewies untold story" we find out Meg is FTM as in the future she is Ron, and in one episode Stewie is dressed up as a girl, Brian askes him how he feels and he says "Right, I feel right" once again ITS A FUNNY CARTOON stop being all rightous about it and just laugh

I'm glad you have a sense of humor about it. His shows make fun of everyone and everything. He takes the most shots at straight white males most of the time. That particular show was actually, ignoring the vomiting, kind of touching at the dad's coming to terms with himself before his surgery.
Good for you for having a sense of humor about yourself. More power to you!

I agree. The quality has gone down. But I still watch it and still enjoy it. I was a BIG fan of "The Tracey Ullman Show" where they first appeared. The Simpsons Movie" which I saw in the theatre was HORRIBLY BAD.:( And there one of the few shows with gay characters.

Speaking of tv shows. Is anyone besides me watching Degrassi ? They have some good gay characters on that including the captain of the high school football team.

I would accept this episode as distasteful humour if it was not for Seth Macfarlane's comments about it. He stated that he thought he was trying to be sympathetic to transpeople when his episode clearly was not. He also said that Brian's reaction is because he is heterosexual, comparing it to "a gay man looking at a vagina." This is atrociously transphobic, so heterosexual men shouldn't date transwomen? If he had simply said that it was a joke and that he wasn't trying to show support for the trans-community (who clearly hate him now) then I would find his behaviour a lot more tolerable.

The quotes I refer to can be found here: http://www.metroweekly.com/news/last_word/201...

Its a joke people, its playing on stereotypes, on top of that, Brian knew the trans character when he was a man, which, honestly, would gross out most heterosexual men. The best rule with comedy is that if it isn't offending someone then its not funny, GET THE FUCK OVER IT!!
