Is the college going to start kicking out students who have premarital sex? If they booted a student for being homosexual because it is against bible teachings, then anyone who breaks the rules, especially the 10 commandments, should be expelled. So you skip church on a Sunday, you're gone, you take the Lord's name in vain, you're gone, swipe a pack of crackers from the cafeteria, you're gone. But that will never happen.

These bible thumpers make a big deal about "following the Lord's word as it is written" but they only selectively practice what they preach. And the individuals and groups they select are the groups against which they are prejudiced.

God gave us to each other to respect, love, and care for. It's not easy to let go of hate and prejudice, but the world would be a better place if each person focused on improving their own behavior towards their fellow human beings rather than in condeming the behavior of others.
Very well said!

While I somewhat lean toward thinking religious schools should be able to decide who stays or goes according to their own religious doctrines, I ask you ponder this:

Isn't this just a reflection of what they'd like to do with all gay people - kick us not only out of their churches and schools but right off the face of the planet?

They can try to argue something to the contrary all they like - they're actions and very often their other statements tell us a different story.

Email to the University of the Cumberlands- 4/12/2006

Hello,

My name is Don Burnham. I'm a college sophomore in Little Rock, Arkansas. I plan on going Pre Med. My question is concerning a news article I saw on CNN today about your school. To be blunt it appears you expelled a student for his sexual orientation. It did not mention anything about grades or disciplinary problems. And the message to the student was quite clear that it was his lifestyle choice, not his commitment to his academics that led to this expulsion. Where do you get off being such complete bigots? That’s right. You Don't.

Let me take a couple quotes from your very own Mission Statement.

"UC continues to offer promising students of all backgrounds a broad based
liberal arts program enriched with Christian values." This says enriched with Christian values. I.E. being good to the common man. Turning the other cheek. Not committing adultery. Etc... So this individual prefers men to women. While it isn't a.k.a. Natural. It is by no means abnormal. And it is only patently offensive to Bigots who can't accept the fact that some people are made differently. YOU ARE A UNIVERSITY FOR CHRIST SAKE! You develop young adult minds. You shape their plans for the future by providing them with the education to go out into the world and MAKE A DIFFERENCE! You don't blatantly insult a student because he was born differently. You don't treat African Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans, or Caucasian Americans differently because of their skin color.

You proclaim you are a LIBERAL ARTS college. The key word being Liberal. Progressive. Open Minded. Willing to Learn and Adapt. Not CLOSE MINDED AND BIGOTED.

"UC encourages students to think critically and creatively so that they may better prepare themselves for lives of responsible service and leadership."

How does being gay affect the ability of said student to fulfill the goals you are setting forth? It in no way has any bearing on the student’s abilities or mental faculties. Or the promise that student may show in response to the seeds planted by your Universities teaching. UNTIL NOW. Now you have completely alienated the student. You have made him the center of a very controversial subject. You have Undeniably and Irrefutably demonstrated your Ignorance and Close-mindedness on a subject that is extremely personal to this student. You have cast this student in a light of Shame for being only what he is. YOU SHOULD BE SHAMED AND UTTERLY DESPISED FOR YOUR DEPLORABLE BEHAVIOR.

How dare you Treat a human being with such contempt. That in itself points out that your CHRISTIAN VALUES are sorely lacking. That you put yourself above others when Jesus Christ, your Lord and Savior, was willing to give his LIFE for "EVERYONE" goes to show that you yourselves do not even understand the message of his death. That everyone should be treated well. He felt love even for the people who murdered him. So you think the student is misguided because of his sexual orientation. SO WHAT? That doesn't mean he is a bad student or a threat to your institution.

I am an Atheist. So that must put me below you as well. So what am I? An underclass? Should I go to a State college because I don't believe in god? Does the fact that I have an IQ above 130 have any bearing on this argument? DOES FREE WILL NOT PLAY A ROLE IN THE PLANS OF GOD! If FREE WILL were not meant to exist then it wouldn't. Period. Exclamation point.

I have never thought so poorly of an institution of learning as I think of yours today. How dare you oh holy righteous believers.

Vehemently,

Don Burnham

By your poor grammar and spelling, I'm assuming you're a young child. How about you get back to studying and leave the adults to discuss things.

They have to chose this lifestyle and it is imoral.
A christian school has the right to remove these students who do imoral acts.

For one thing, some people need to learn how to spell. The estrangement of the school from the gay student is a policy issue. Did you ever stop and think what gays do, with each other?

I think about it all the time. When I'm not doing it that is, but I guess I think about it then too.
But please, tell us anyway. I bet it would be hot to have a straight guy say it. Oh wait till I get into position so I can really enjoy it.....

Yes, the Bible does say that a man shall not lie with a man as with a woman. The Bible also says that if a bride is not a virgin, that she should be executied by stoning immediately. The Bible says that if a married person has sex with someone else's husband/wife the Bible commands that both adulterers be stoned to death. Divorce is strickly forbidden in both Testaments, as is remarriage of anyone who has been divorced. The Bible forbids married couples from having sexual intercourse during a woman's period. If they disobey, both shall be executed. The Bible says if a man dies with out children, his widow is ordered by biblical law to have intercourse with each of his brothers in turn
until she bears her deceased husband a male heir. The Bible says that if a man gets into a fight with another man and his wife seeks to rescue her husband by grabbing the enemy's genitals, her hand shall be cut off and no pity shall be shown her. The Bible says that sex with a prositute is o.k. for a husband, but not for the wife. Polygamy is acceptable, as is a king having many concubines.(Solomon had 1,000) Slavery, sex with slaves, marriage of girls aged 11-13 and treatment of women as property are all acceptable practices in the Bible. On the other had, there are strict prohibitions against inter-racial marriage, birth control, naming a sexual organ and seeing one's parents nude. THe bible also prohibits round haircuts, tattoos, working on the Sabbath, weraring garments of mixed fabrics, eating pork or shellfish, getting your fortune told, even playing with the skin of a pig.(no football)

I also know what the Bible says about God. God is love. We are to love God and Love each other. Christ died for all, no exeptions. Christ did not say, I'm on this cross for the Baptists, or the Methodists, or the Muslims or the Catholics or the blacks or the whites only, he died and rose so that all people might have eternal life. God sent his son into the world not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved thru him. I am a Christian mother of a gay son, and friend to many gay/lesbian people throughout my life. I have researched and studied extensively about homosexuality. It is not a choice. Gay people choose to be gay the same day straight people choose to be straight. Being gay or straight is about how you have been created. The same as your eye color, body type, skin tone, shape of your face. Many Christian Americans have pounded and shouted out the same Bible verses about gays, but do not know the facts. GOD LOVES US ALL!!! We will all stand before him to be judged, and I doubt he will inquire why we loved who we loved, no matter what sex. I think he will want to know how we treated every human being we came in contact with, and did we love them the way God loves them.

You mean go to work, pay their bills, pay their taxes, work to advance themselves in their chosen careers?

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH? You mean what do they do in the privacy of their own homes? Well, i'll tell you what my friend. You open up your life 100% and i'll open up my life 100%. Please don't insult my intellegence by telling me you live a perfect and stain-free life. We all have private lives and they are called PRIVATE LIVES for a reason! You want the government to lookin SOME bedrooms but not yours!

There are no gay folks fornicating in the streets! Lesbian's arent running around in the mall's licking each other's labias. Gay men aren't having anal sex on in the lobby's of McDonald's restaurants.

Being gay is NO MORE about genitalia than is being str8! I just don't undestand how some folks just accept the fact that SOME HUMANS are born with the innate need to love another person of the same sex. Despite the attempts by religious zealots to continue to define homosexuality as a "disease" or "sicknkess," the society at-large understand and accepts that to be NOT TRUE!

Its not ALL about sex!

That's what they get for hiring a local good old boy instead of a proper college President. The Taylor family is corrupt in Williamsburg and their cronies line their pockets with the construction monies. Also, they have strip mined and clear cut every acre of their substantial legacy given to them from former students. Cumberland was started to help the poor mountain kids. It is ironic that not many of the poor locals can afford to go here as they have some of the highest tuition around. Taylor has stultified the endowment of the college to erect fake Georgian buildings so as to benefit fasmily and friends with contracts.

But some students are publicly questioning the school's values, Kuder said. Many wore shirts yesterday with "God loves my gay friends" printed on them and are waiting for Johnson to let them know the best response to the university.
As for all of the students who wore these shirts..They need some type of punnishment for this also.
This is just showing the loose morals we have anymore.
Man, you are one sick puppy. God teaches us to Love our neighbors as ourselves. i think one could include one's fellow students/teachers as one's neighbors. so it seems to me that the school's leadership is simply ignoring any of Christ's commandments that are too difficult for them to follow.
I find it repulsive that so called Christians pick out the specific scriptures from the Bible that will justify their own twisted sense of morality, while ignoring any of those scriptures that teach about the unconditional love of God, and the fact that we humans should not judge others lest we be judged.
I do not believe that the administrators in this school are Christian. They are just Christian wannabes.

I don't care. Why do you? Are you a closet case gay??
If not, why are you thinking about it???
Do you fantasize about having sex with another guy??
Maybe you should see a gay friendly therapist who could help you come out of your closet, and perhaps even love yourself, so you could learn to love others as well.

Maybe you need to go back to school and learn something.

You are obviously not a christian yourself, but this was a christian school.

I believe they are supposed to follow in Christ's footsteps. You know--welcoming the saint and the sinner to your table, loving all, the two great commandments from Jesus. That stuff.

Didn't sound like they were living up to that at all. Just because YOU aren't a christian, doesn't mean that supposedly real christians should turn against Jesus' own words and deeds.

Let me tell you: Beng gay is NOT a choice of lifestyle, how can you even think about it?! If gay people would have a chose they would certainly not choose for beng gay, if you see how people respond without any knowledge about the subject.
Jesus was a person who loved everyone, and people who are so focussed on what the bible literally say's surely don't know what beng a christian is all about!
I am also on a christian college, but the big difference is that everyone here is accepted as equal, if they're black or white; man or woman; gay of heterosexual.
And I know that people who are against this equality , won't chance their mind but I know one thing and that is that god loves everyone, including me!
I guess that America was the country where everyone is born equal? I wouldn't say so,...
Saying this is like saying that Jack the Ripper was born into spilling people's guts onto the street. People choose to sin. They may be led into it, as Adam and Eve were when they took the apple, but they still chose to take the apple, thereby sinning. Being gay is a sin, therefore being gay is a choice.

THAT SAID, and having gone to a Christian school for the past year and will continue to go for the next three years, I think that it was wrong on the schools part to expel the gay kid. That is basically saying "We are better than this kid because he is gay, so let's throw him off campus!"

The fact that it is a Christian college does not make it better. It gives us a bad name, like we are all highly judgemental super-conservatives that hate gays down to the very bone.

The fact of the matter is, straits aren't any better than gays. We're all hideous, sinful monsters, and the Lord values us all the same. No one's special. And that's what this is all about.
