I think this is the time for us to show we're better people than them.

Also, any celebrations or counter picketing at his funeral would just give them the attention they desire.

As tempting as it may be to celebrate the death of a hateful bigot, the best thing we could do is basically ignore it.

If they really want to save some money, just throw old Shirley in the coffin, slam it shut, and get a two for one burial!!

I have always fervently agreed with this if you could get everyone to cooperate.

There's n-o-w-a-y that's going to happen.

So I have zero problem with the people who will celebrate.

If you could literally FORCE everyone by mind control (lol) to utterly ignore this, all at the same time, I'd be on board in a second.

Having witnessed the funeral of a young military man, disrupted by the Phelp's Kult, and the total bewilderment and grief on the parents added upon by their presence, I would gladly donate to a festive carnival, with flashing rainbow colored lights on day of the old goat's funeral.

I agree with you 100%.

Phelps has lived his entire life in a virtual cesspool of human excrement. I, for one, have no need to crawl into the muck just to prove that I'm capable as being as debased as he has been.

I remember being in Washington DC in 1996 and encountering the WBC while they were protesting with their hateful signs and their demonic speeches. At one point they started singing a hymn that I happen to love. I stood on the sidewalk opposite them and sang along. At the end I simply shook my head and smiled ruefully. Man, were they p.o.'ed! And I was able to walk away with my dignity intact, grateful that I hadn't sunk to their level.

They aren't powerful enough or important enough to inspire anything but my pity.

I also agree. You can't teach that it's wrong to picket funerals, by picketing a funeral. We should rise above the behavior that we think is wrong, and set an example of the behavior we want to see in others.

It's hard to let go of retributive feelings, but they can only lead us down to our opponent's level. They can never lead us up.

I would cheer his death somewhat, but not picket a funeral, I don't think.

I will cheer harder when the more "respectable," yet far more damaging homophobes, such as Pat Robertson and Tony Perkins, die. Shouldn't be too long now for the former, at least.

If younger or more radical people want to go picket Phelps' funeral then I don't mind all that much. We've always had a range of opinions since even before Stonewall.

I agree! It just feels good to vent it all. If the old guy dies, and no one acknowledges his existence, that would be sweet Karma!

Definitely.

We should be sad at his passing.

We're losing the best recruiter for our side since Anita Bryant.
