While I religion of any kind ridiculous, I do appreciate the impressive architecture of many churches, including the National Cathedral. Even as a kid I was jealous of my friends who got to go to a "cool" church while I was drug to the local catholic church in a flat-roofed single story leanto like building.

While I won't set foot inside any church, I still like photographing them from the outside- at a safe distance......

You should go inside with your camera. Churches and cathedrals have some of the finest paintings, frescoes, and architecture on the inside. I have over a thousand photos of the insides of churches from the U.S. and Europe. Many of them being stain-glass windows, a fascination of mine. I also photograph the stain-glass windows of mausoleums from many of the cemeteries. You are missing some really great photographs.

Face your fears, and go inside. I suggest the frescoes in the St. Louis Cathedral (the new one, not the old one). You may be able to find a pic on Google. They are some of the finest in our country, and that's not just local pride speaking.

I recently came across this book on American Synagogue Architecture. The cover photo of the ark design caused me to collapse in gales of laughter in the bookstore.

I'll bet all the A-gays will line up for this one: wedding in the National Cahedral, maybe even with a priest (or are they vicars?) who calls God "Gawd", lots of bells and smells. Every groomzillas dream!

The National Cathedral is something to see. I liked its modern gargoyles, one is of a guy with a cell phone!

I agree with your assessment of mausoleum stained-glass
.
Some mausoleum panels are downright celestial; not to mention they often date back to the 1800s
.
Totally awesome!
.
On another note; the gay church in our town has some nice century-old stained glass of its own
