Apparently, she believes that heterosexuals do not get married simply for the benefits it offers. I personally know one straight couple who did this, and three couples, made up of gay men and lesbians, who also married for the benefits. It didn't make a hell of a beans difference to the government or their employers. So, quite in difference to her beliefs, it does happen currently, and Marriage Equality will not affect the situation at all.

I guess Ms. Everhart prefers the good ole days when gays and lesbians married heteros in "fake marriages".

She reminds me of a politician we had here in Florida who got the bestiality law passed because she opposed "animal husbandry".

I used to work with a woman that was on her third husband. She was very open about the fact that she'd marry any guy that had a regular paycheck and decent health benefits because she was a single mother and she didn't earn enough money to do it on her own. She referred to herself as a single mother. While she was married.

So her solution? Marry any guy that will ask her that has a decent job. Stick around until he either loses the job or they can't stand each other anymore. Then get a divorce and start looking for the next one.

Her daughter was 3-1/2 when I knew her and things were just starting to go south with husband number three, so I guess, by her standards, things were going according to plan.

I kidded with her once that she should at least go on one of the marriage game shows where first prize is getting married--at least she'd get a trip out of deal. Her response? "Too hard. It's way easier to find a guy to marry me in the bar."

No kidding.

She certainly doesn't think much of hetero marriage, if she thinks that mere pals will hook up for whatever reason to get some benefits? So, let me get this clear. Two heteros who cannot get a wife will "marry" to get benefits, thus removing any chance of marrying an opposite sex spouse? Sounds possible to me.

Is she an IDIOT? Anyone supposedly bright enough to be elected to office who uses "Y'all" in a sentence is suspect of being an moron, or at least the toothless cast of "Deliverance" who elected her are even dumber. Cue the banjo music!

Yeah, find me one heterosexual man who's going to marry another dude for the benefits! People might think they're gay and their little peckers would shrivel up even smaller at the thought of it.

Just another stupid red herring from the GOPasaurs- the KINGS & QUEENS of fake marriages!

(yes, I'm talking about YOU Senator McConnell)

I LOVE it when your type tries to use big words that you don't understand. Please explain how marriage will become "undefined".

SO cute.

I wonder.... Has anyone done a survey of the marital histories of those in congress that support vs. oppose marriage equality? I bet it would be very interesting if they did.

I think Maggie Gallagher has been divorced several times, and so has Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh.

How would straights marrying the same sex to get benefits be any different than a gay man marrying a lesbian to get benefits or a straight woman marrying a straight man for his money? If straight couples can marry for benefits why not gay couples? I don't believe the U.S. requires people to love each other to get married, unfortunately most of the U.S. requires couples to be of the opposite gender even if they don't love each other but a loving gay couple that has been together for decades is denied those rights.

Marrying just for the benefits with no intent to live as spouses is considered fraud in the military, and people have been punished for it.

Wrong, you stupid, sick caliphate windbag.

The government may decide not to grant a license to proposed couples for any rational, governmental purpose.

You evilgelical reprobates have shown none to bar same sex marriage. So now all that's left is for the lot of you to go meet jeeshush.

It's also ben punished outside teh military such as when parties marry in order for one to obtain a green card.

When I was in college, I actually had a student approach me and ask if I could "set her up" with a gay male, so that she could marry him to obtain a green card (she was from Great Britain). She told me to tell any prospective "husband", that they would not live together and there would never be any sex between them.

I declined to help her out in this regard.

I think it was in 2010 that New York state became the last state to legalize "no fault" divorce. The concept of no fault divorce has arguably done more to increase divorce than pretty much anything else. Where was NOM then? Not a peep.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was using a "big word." Let me explain it to you. Define means "to fix or mark the limits of." The term "marriage" currently has the limits of a man and a woman. In others words, the definition is "the union of a man and a woman." If you take away the limits of "a man and a woman," you are left with only "a union." Pretty indistinct with nothing to mark the limits. Undefined.

OK, you've done enough homework. Now run outside and play.

Yeah, I actually thought that New York, where I'm from, was still the last hold-out on no-fault divorce, but I looked it up, and I think it was about the time you say that they changed it.

And Maggie Gallagher bore a son out of wedlock, so she's not really the person one would want to advocate the position of the "sanctity of marriage".
She's also a Roman Catholic supposedly, so she therefore does not believe in the concept of Freedom Of religion as enshrined in teh U.S. Constitution.

She has no credibility.
