Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel: Illinois Should Legalize Gay Marriage

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is sending a message to Illinois lawmakers this week: Illinois must lead the way for marriage equality. Emanuel called on Illinoisans to make same-sex marriage a reality Nov. 13 in a statement issued by his office.

The statement notes the mayor's past support of civil unions in Illinois as well as his support for ending the military's ban on openly gay service. "While we have come to a greater appreciation for the contributions of the GLBT community, gays and lesbians are still denied one essential freedom: the right to make a life-long commitment to the person they love," Emanuel wrote.

The statement goes on to note the diversity of Chicago and the history of Illinois as a leader on struggles for equality. "Marriage is the next step in our nation's march forward," Emanuel wrote. "Illinois must lead the way."

As MAYOR, and NOT a governor, Rahm Emmanuel should concern himself with the SKYROCKETING homicide rate in Chicago which is now MORE THAN 400% that of New York's homicide rate ! And Chicago is a tiny fraction of the size of New York !

Marriage equality could be passed as soon as the end of this month in their special session. Rep Harris is counting votes, and has said when he's confident he has the votes, he'll bring forth a bill. More likely it will be sometime in 2013.

So let the poor and black continue to get slaughtered in Chicago because Rahm would rather spend his time, energy and money on a STATE MATTER, rather than spending those things on greater police protection, the apprehension of criminals, and the protection of his city's citizens, right ?
