Many people have this impression that a "principled stand" has to be something good, honorable and virtuous. But they fail to realize that there can also be false principles.

One of OED's definitions of principle is: "A general statement or tenet forming the basis of a system of belief etc.; a primary assumption forming the basis of a chain of reasoning". But there is no guarantee that such a primary assumption is necessarily the truth. It could be false reasoning, leading to a chain reaction of disastrous behavior.

So for example, centuries ago, many were guided by a principle stating that certain races were superior to others. That led to 'principled' behavior that excluded particular races for fear that they might corrupt 'polite' society. Today it's obvious how false that principle was.

In like manner, the BSA might think their stand 'principled' based on their assumption that homosexuality corrupts morals, but that doesn't mean it's true, valid or even virtuous. History will prove that it was as deceptive as the false principle of racial superiority.

The boy scout's ban is neither principled nor honorable nor is Governor Perry's.

I'm so glad to be part of "the flavor of the month" club and into such a great fad... Perry's a moron, and stuck living in Mr. Roger's world of "Make Believe".

I agree. The Confederates, The Communists, and The Democratic Party, all stand on "principle". All are wrong. All are Evil. PURE EVIL.

"He [Sam Houston] was against slavery, and stood up and very passionately said you know, Texas does not need to leave the Union over this issue of slavery. He was right, but it cost him his governorship," Perry said."

Horse pucky! Houston was a slave owner and was vehemently against abolition. He refused to take the Confederate Oath because he correctly foresaw that the North would eventually win the war.

Rick Perry is a f*cking liar.
