Christian Civic League of Maine Tries To Guilt Town Clerks Into Shirking Their Duties

Dec 28, 2012 | Posted by: Rick in Kansas | Full story: pamshouseblend.firedoglake.com

With Maine's marriage equality law taking effect on Saturday, Dec. 29, Carroll Conley and Bob Emrich of the anti-gay Christian Civic League of Maine are pressing town clerks to shirk their duties by refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

When your god starts bankrolling your paycheck, then go ahead and listen to her. But as long as my tax dollars are paying you, you work for me. Do you job or get out. There are other, more qualified, less bigoted folk that would gladly do your job, your complete job for everyone.

I have to say that I agree with this comment from the article:
"You know, I might have some iota of concern about these noble “Christian” clerks if they had ever objected to any of the heretics, blasphemers, fornicators and adulterers they've been serving, apparently without incident, for their entire careers. But to arbitrarily draw the line at homosexuals – so it’s fine for them to issue licenses to some hetero guy with monogamy issues who’s on his 5th or 6th wedding, but not TEH GAYZ – sorry, that just doesn't fly". by CPT_Doom

This is a good comment!!!

So... Have any Mainers taken the bait? I think they'll have a hard time recruiting their martyrs.

These religious freaks are trying to provoke a lawsuit because they think the courts will back them on their "religious freedom". They will be shocked when they lose yet again.

These folks just don't get it that just because they have the right to believe as they do.......that they must have the same protections under the laws as a Church or Clergy does and they DON'T!!!!

I often wonder if these same efforts took place to prevent couples from marrying that were interracial?

They are certainly a 'league,' and they are obviously in Maine, but there is nothing else in their name that fits. They should be sued, first, for false advertising. Civic? No. Christian? Not even close.

If any of these clerks fall for this and get fired for their refusal to do their jobs, will these radio jerks pony up and cover their lost wages? You betcha.

Maybe we should all be calling them—remember, they said we could—and, acting as a clerk, ask if they'll make sure our families eat and our mortgages and car payments are taken care of if we follow their advice. I've notice that activists like this, and yes sometimes even our gay community has them, are always demanding others make sacrifices they themselves are not asked to make.(Union leaders also fall into this category.)

I would support a christian clerk refusing to issue a marriage license to gay couples if that clerk had also refused licenses to liars, thieves, murderers and those wanting things that others have (things ACTUALLY mentioned in the ten commandments), as well as idolaters, blaphemers, atheists, those that serve other gods, Wiccans, women having their periods, eaters of shellfish, wearers of poly/cotton blends and all of those who failed to slaughter an ox for any Sunday service, as required in Leviticus.

Otherwise they are simply hypocrites trying to hide themselves and their bigotry behind the bible's skirts. Fire them all and let the cow chips fall where they may.

This makes sense if the clerks were being asked to ss mary themselves, but to issue a state license in accordance with the law. They have no basis.

And like others have posted......if they are willing to serve couples who have been divorced, committed adultery, committed murder, committed rape, fornicated outside the bonds of marriage or any other violation that is or may be considered against God......yet make an big issue about how serving Same-Sex Couples is against their religious beliefs.....then they are hypocrites and need to either do their job, resign or be fired!!!

As I pointed out on the thread about clerks in Maryland planning the same thing, if Maine also has a public accommodations law that covers sexual orientation, these clerks could face fines and other sanctions.

The religious right is NOT acting like good Christians in this regard. They are ignoring what is clear in the Bible in many places.

1 Peter 2:13-17
13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.

15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.

16 [Act] as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but [use it] as bondslaves of God. 17 Honor all men; love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.

Titus 3:1-2
Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

And since Galatians 3:28 says: "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." they are ignoring that we are their brethren. They face the judgement found in the parable of the goats and sheep fpund in Matthew.

And let's not forget Romans 2:

if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 As it is written:“God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.

These two men as well as Michael Heath are really fringe characters in Maine. If you mention them in conversation in this state most people will roll their eyes and give you the "Oh them again!" look.

Other then legends in their own minds most people don't give them much credence and many see them as pesky annoyances. All are well educated and dedicated individuals but sadly misdirected.

They have all played an important part in the gay rights/marriage fight in Maine as many people have come to see them as exactly the reason why laws needed to be passed to protect the rights of all of Maine's citizens.

I do agree with you that if fines and sanctions can be handed out for them failing to do their jobs.....then it should be done....otherwise, don't do your job.......be prepared to be fired!!!

I haven't read any accounts of anyone taking their quasi-legal advise and trying to pull a stunt like this. In fact, there's been complete quiet on the Christian effrontery front up there so far. Knock wood.

These guys are the local fronts for our nationwide opponents. There never has been any significant grass roots organization against SSM in Maine. It was all imported. They have tried and failed to import opposition to gays and lesbians in New Hampshire and Vermont, as well.

Even though we will probably lose a couple more ballot measures--Indiana seems very likely in 2014--we will begin winning because we have learned to activate local movements. Our model will be carried forth to the next state that has a ballot measure on marriage equality.

Up until now, our opponents have basically had a walk to the ballot box. All they needed to do was recycle a few scary commercials (A Storm Is Coming!) and send a few preachers to the pulpit with their message. I'm sure they have learned this year that they need to run a grass roots ground campaign going forward. But I've seen no evidence that they'll be able to sustain a ground movement. Our opponents tire of the difficult work of one-on-one conversations and GOTV much more quickly than our supporters.

Yankees are very practical. There were no significant refusals in New Hampshire, either. Vermont had several recalcitrant JP's when civil unions went into effect--there was even a site directing people to GLBT-friendly officials. But there was not a peep when marriage equality was introduced. Massachusetts and Connecticut had no patience for whiny employees. They simply got in line and did their jobs.

I'd been in touch with relatives up there and they hadn't heard anything. It was like the good Christians made their little statement followed by the sound of crickets. They keep preaching the apocalypse for Christian freedom, even try to instigate it themselves, but nothing except really bad examples.
