what a sad state for the US this is, not New York, but the fact that a human being is being attacked and no one did anything to help. I am more embarrassed to admit living here than ever right now.

Shades of Kitty Genovese (I'm guessing you might be too young to remember her, so google her name).

Unfortunately if this happened in Toronto and bystanders intervened, they'd probably be arrested themselves for improper restraint.

One of the huge legal differences between the US and Canada (well, at least Ontario) is that the US seems to support vigilanteism whereas Canada does not want to allow any self-defence when police are not present. There should be a happy medium.

If we could find that medium I would be happy with this country. lol

But yeah, not saying we're the worst country, just that so many people here still think we're the best country.

Reading the article, it seems that Black trash were the attackers.

USA is a great country but we have our share of Hispanic, Black and White trash and the only thing trash understands is a firm judicial hand that punishes them with brutal sentences for violent crimes.

Now you dive right into the racism, which complete disrespects the person who was attacked by politicizing the incident for your own agenda. You are a sick person and you need help.

The onlookers were probably afraid of coming into contact with blood-borne pathogens such as AIDS.

They were more afraid of vicious thugs, I bet. Nothing says "a lady" like attacking a stranger physically!

So, you have NO problem with a gang beating someone who did nothing to warrant it? You have a thug mind set too, I am afraid.

How proud you must be of YOUR bully back ground! I bet you were the terror of El Segundo High School.

CurlyCheese, you are being presumptuous. Though my original post may appear callous, I do not condone physical violence against anyone, except in self defense.
You should note that the majority of attacks against gays are now staged. Staged by gays in a distorted way to contribute to the gay cause, or for monetary gain. Seems like every gay now desires to be a Gay Crusader.

A hard call... suppose you were sitting on the subway, listening to radio or reading or just zoning out and suddenly you heard a commotion, and found that 3 or so people were beating up someone. Would you just jump in? Who is at fault? How do you know,*while* it's going on? What if you *did* know, but saw that the 3 were big, young, strong thugs? Would you chance getting stabbed, beaten, yourself? The question is whether someone ran to the emergency phone and called the cops... which given the details of the report, seems to be the case. I hope.
As for gays "staging" attacks... oh right, guy, you go stage an attack on yourself and see how it feels to get beaten up.

Vigilantyism (sp ?) is NOT supported in the U.S., but the RIGHT to self-defense, INCLUDING the use of deadly force, certainly is.

No, because you would accuse someone who is brutally beaten of staging it based on only one actual case of that happening, in which it wasn't because she was gay it was because she had a mental disorder, and lots of people have that disorder. It's called M√ľnchhausen Syndrome, even the by-proxy version is so common that psychologists have been warning about it for decades now. You dishonestly paint the picture the way you want it to look because you are a vile animal, a bigot.

Facts don't bear you out. The US has the highest percentage of incarcerated people of any country yet it does not have the lowest crime rate.

you have no idea how horrible it is to be picked out and threatened. I have had some scary calls and NONE of them were staged. It was pure random. The scariest was walking along Pacific Coast Hwy in Laguna Beach. out of the blue a fancy car drove by and the passenger yelled the favorite F word at me and tossed a bottle. It hit at my feet and shattered, cutting my ankle a bit. I never felt more vulnerable in my life. Do you really think I invited that event?

A friend of mine in West Hollywood was walking home from dinner one night at about 8 PM and a car pulled up and he suddenly saw a gun. Before he could move, they shot at his face and the BB hit a half inch from his eye. He still has nightmares about where that could have gone that evening, if it had been MORE than BB's, or if it hit his eye. Do you think HE staged that?
