Should Gay/Lesbian Club be Allowed at High School?

Feb 28, 2011 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: KIII

A controversial issue is being debated at Flour Bluff High School: Should a student be allowed to start an on-campus gay and lesbian support club? The Flour Bluff superintendent says she will not approve any on-campus meetings of a club like that, but the students who want it say that amounts to unfair discrimination.

I think it's alright to have clubs at school that encourage acceptance, tolerance, and cultural accpetance. School is part of preparation for life. It doesn't always have to be about academia.

I meant to write cultural differences. The more I think about what I wrote; however, the more I may consider rescinding my post. I cannot find a delete button! I am all for encouraging understanding of different lifestyles as long as they aren't harming other human beings i.e. Nazi groups, KKK, and the like. I don't know that I believe schools are able to accomodate so many clubs, however. I don't know the rules on that. BUT, I certainly do believe if there is an adult willing to "head up" the club, and if the club doesn't take up class time, then there shouldn't be any issue with it.

You know what's odd, if a child has a hard time paying attention and is a little hyper, they pump them with drugs and call it a disorder! If this same kid wants to be with the same sex and act like the opposite sex then they are just expressing themselves and should be accepted! Homosexuality is a disorder that should be cured not ACCEPTED!!!

No there shouldn't! There is no "Straight Club". Just have a fat, ugly, mullet-haired girl club instead.

Just about every school is one big "Straight Club" and their numerous cliques are "Streaight Clubs".

It was the so-called "Christian fundamentalists" that got the federal Equal Access Act passed by congress in 1986, BECAUSE they wanted the kids to be able to form their own religious clubs in the public schools. Which I think is perfectly fine.

But as the old saying goes: "Be careful what you wish for," because in getting the act passed, they also forced the schools to accept student-formed clubs of ALL KINDS, INCLUDING "Gay-Straight Alliances."

If the fundies now don't like that, they have only themselves to blame for working so hard to get the act passed in the first place.

And what are they SO AFRAID OF anyway ?! What do they think goes on at these GSA's ?! I'd like someone here who is against GSA's to tell me what they thnk goes on there and why you are unhappy with them.

And a few years ago, I read a good teen novel called "The Geography Club" about a group of gay teens that form their own "secret club" in high school. It was touching, and humorous, and I highly recommend it.

The last book I finished was Chuck Panozzo's autobiography about a month ago. He is the out gay co-founder and bassist of the SuperGroup STYX. I recommend that book also.

And Grace Slick's autobiography was also GREAT & FUNNY.

LOL

It's interesting how there aren't that many gay ppl. There are more straight, conservative ppl. Texas is a very conservative state. But the media (which is the loud, leftist, gay) makes ppl believe that "everybody's doing it", or "it's cool to be gay".

I guess if they wanna have this lil club it's ok. It'll dwindle down to the only gay couple in the school, anyway.

From what I understand the law protects this club just as Christian athletes or scouts. Schools are PUBLIC property - citizens own them, therefore the public has every right to meet.

I don't see the harm in allowing a few teens to get together and discuss their issues. By stopping them, it will lead to suicides, running away, drug use, etc. These kids are screaming for help and their community is shutting them out. On second thought....these kids deserve better. The adults in their lives want to hide the issue and pretend it isn't happening. As Dr. Phil would say "How's that working for ya???".

Continued:

I see so many possibilities for this group. A respected adult could really help. They could arrange to have guest speakers (doctors, psychiatrists, counselors, pastors, other helpful agencies). This club could help others with the bullying problems, sexting..

If someone took the time to lead this group there is no telling how far it could reach.

Sorry for going on and on - my kids have all graduated and are "straight". I did have a daughter that experimented with the other sex but after a short time decided on her own that it didn't follow her beliefs. She's just a great kid that needed a little understanding while she figured things out.

I'm a bi teen and I really think it should be a club as long as it has proper education, and I'm in the Catagory, but i am against gay males, but I'm fine with bisexual males.

Update us on the club at Flour Bluff. Is it still continuing? How many kids are involved? Who sponsors the club? How or what have they done for their community? Or was all this for show??

Lets get them all in the same place at the same time so we can identify them all. Then we can get together, take some names down, and know who to target. ;)

I doubt what you say will happen, because this law has been on the book for DECADES, and it hasn't yet. Besides, I think you need an adult "adviser" for any club, and I doubt any teacher would want to be associated with any of the kinds of clubs you mentioned.
. Mr.Stanton,as a nation we took the wrong turn many decades ago.Im old school and I think we allow too much clubing as it is . Education has been redefined and schools are no longer is the central institution for learning .Our teachers used to teach the nessesary subjects that enlighten the human mind. Now we have graduates that barely understand the basic instructions to the simplest problems .....but what do we do to help this dying system ?we add more and more contreversal clubs of all kinds. We need to improve our education. Not complicate it .Thanks for standing up for whats right.

Only a person with a mental illness would seek special rights from the govt, claim they are seeking equal rights, and yet stereotype themselves away from the herd. Only a decadent democrat could pull off such a subversive evil plot. Boy or girl, man or woman.
Its gonna backfire in the not so distant future. Keep jumping.
