If someone refuses to serve gays it's just the same as someone who refuses to serve blacks or Christians. Just people you don't like the minority doesn't make it more okay to discriminate against one group than another and religious views are not an excuse for discrimination for religious views could be used to excuse discrimination against blacks and women.

Why do the people ordering the cake have to tell the baker that it's for a lesbian wedding ? Just say "I want to order a cake." There's really no need to tell them anything else.

One can easily decorate the cake without the need of a baker.

If one called a baker and said, "I want to order a cake for the American Communist Party",(aka The Democrats), and the baker refused, would the person ordering the cake sue ?!

I think NOT !

Oh, it feels weird to agree with you!

This guy's job is to MAKE A CAKE. He doesn't get to decide what they can or can't do with it, once he's finished with his obligation.

What if they want to have SEX with the cake? What if they intend to donate it to the KKK? What if they plan to assassinate a politician with it? This is NOT HIS CALL.

If he wants to tout his skills as a cake-baker, then BAKE THE F***ING CAKE. Nobody is going to find his business in the Yellow Pages under "Moral Authority", and that isn't why he is hired.

But I LOVE the part where he DENIES calling them an "abomination unto the Lord". Oh, so you're saying you'd like to DISTANCE yourself from that biblical qualifier? I don't blame you. But, either come out and admit that this is primitive BS, or OWN it PROUDLY like a Good Christian should. Lukewarm, eh?

I will now accept questions from people wondering what the hell the Yellow Pages are. Or were.

I have a funny story about the "Yellow Pages" that happned to me recently. This past October I rented a house in Coolidge, Arizona. Years ago, when most people had land-lines, it was very easy to find a Yellow Pages, or ask the phone company to deliver one (I only have a celfone and have not had a land-line in many years).

So after moving here to Coolidge, I naturally needed a local phone book. I was very pleased to see someone had thrown a small plastic-wrapped phone book on my driveway. But I was VERY surprised to see that after I removed the waterproof plastic wrapper, the ENTIRE PHONE BOOK is in Spanish !

So I stopped at the local police station and asked where i could get a local phone book (I didn't think it was reasonable to ask the locla land-line phone company for a free one since I don't have a land-line phone), and teh police person told me to stop at the local chamber of commerce.

So I stopped at the local chamber of commerce, and they had stacks of them, and tehy gave me a free one. So I showed teh people there the one that was thrown in my driveway that is all in Spanish. They said they had never seen a phone book all in Spanish before, and had never heard of the company who produced it. So I have no idea why someone tossed one in my driveway.

If you would like to see teh house I'm renting, there's a short video tour of it here:

Why should same-sex couples be expected to hide when heterosexuals aren't?

I expect that the baker, knowing that it was a wedding cake they were ordering, asked if they wanted the little bride and groom cake topper. Normal people wouldn't think they should avoid giving a truthful answer to simple questions like that.

Expecting gays and lesbians to cater to the homophobes is just like saying African-Americans need to cater to the KKK. How well do you think THAT would go over?

On that subject, suppose someone ordered a cake with a burning cross on top? If I were in the cake business I'd ask whether they wanted decorative flames or some kind of sparkler arrangement. It would be repugnant to me, but I could not refuse it. On the other hand, if someone asked me to put small rodents in the cake batter and bake them alive, I would not do so on the grounds of cruelty - I doubt they would be able to sue in that case.

The Ace of Cakes dude is going to make their cake.......and that is an awesome thing.......HOWEVER, it doesn't excuse this person's actions.

When are these sort of folks going to learn that as a business owner, you can't discriminate!!!

I understand that what the cake designer did was wrong......as far as making the derogatory comments about who the couple was........but there are better ways to handle it........on both sides of the issue..........unfortunately.. ......it's going to lead to a possible lawsuit.

Those folks who already hate Gays and Lesbians will just see this as stomping on someone's religious beliefs and freedoms, but if the situation was reversed.......would be screaming discrimination all over the place!!!!

The only way the bigots learn is to hit them in the wallet where it hurts. Shop elsewhere AND sue them.

So this guy won't mind when he takes his family to the movies and they won't sell him tickets because he is "christian?"

Will he mind if he can't get gas at a certain gas station for the same reason?

Would he mind if he wasn't a baker himself, but went to another baker who refused to make a cake for his kid's first holy communion?

When you're in business, you serve all kinds of people. I'm sure I've sold things over the years to real jerks. On the plus side, I have those jerks' money when they're done, and I can use it to support things they don't like.

Either you're a professional, or you're not. This guy is not.

With all that said, I don't think he should be compelled to fill that order. I think he should be able to make an ass of himself and then either thrive or go out of business as a result of the marketplace itself.

What archaic person uses a phone book anymore? Some cities have stopped printing them already. Get with it, grampy. Stop putting out your address. What is wrong with you?

He's probably one who weeps that his business is off because of the recession. Why doesn't he just hang up an "Out of Business" sign and be done with it?

From what I have heard, wedding cakes are like mega hundreds of dollars for about $5 of flour and sugar. Is he stupid?

I wanted the phone book so I could learn where the nearest diner, pizza parlor, laundromat, dry cleaner, and other things in the city are at. Paper phone books ARE useful. I just never saw one completely in Spanish.

And this place is so out of the way I doubt anyone will bother to stop by. And if someone does, I'll say, "Hi. Come on in, sit down and have a nice cold beer.:)" WWJD?

I think if I was a baker who did not want Fundie customers I'd name my business the 666 Bakery. The motto underneath the name would be "Devil Food Cakes Our Specialty." The would scare the Jesus out of them before the darkened my doors!
