Deadbeat parents cost taxpayers $53 billion

Full story: money.cnn.com

Over $100 billion is owed in unpaid child support -- nearly half of that to taxpayers supporting children on public assistance.

With SSM such a big issue this year, with four States voting on SSM, and with the focus of the anti gay forces on "the good of the children", I think we should look at how focused the religious right is in actually helping the children most in need.

According to the federal Office of Child Support Enforcement, $108 billion in total back payments was owed to parents with custody of children in 2009. If those payments aren't made and the children then need to go on public assistance, payments are supposed to be made to the government in the form of reimbursement. About 49% of that back money -- or roughly $53 billion -- is owed to the government, according to Joan Entmacher, vice president of family & economic security of the National Women's Law Center.

Using the example of deadbeat straight parents as justification for allowing innocent children to be subjected to being raised in a homosexual household is the most blatant form of rationalization.

No it's just a reminder that straight households aren't the end all and be all that you wing-nuts claim they are.

Straight parents aren't better parents or better for kids just because they are straight. Good parents are good parents because they give a shit about their kids, biological or adopted makes no difference to good parents.

Yes, straights need to get their act together on the parenting issue, but queer parenting is not the answer.
Why do you conclude each of your posts with an exclamation point? Do gays see everything as orgasmic?

Q. If gays could reproduce, what would they use for birth control?
A. Their personalities.

You have it backwards. It's you people that are constantly fantasizing about how wonderful and perfect all heterosexual parents are that this article is directed to. It's just another example of how inaccurate your fantasies are, isn't it?

But, hey! Don't let reality get in the way of your fantasies. You just keep right on believing that straight couples are all living in utter bliss with their perfect families and every child is a wanted and loved child. Go ahead!!

But don't look too close. You might find out that there are MILLIONS of children in foster care that have been dumped by their bio parents. MILLIONS more are being raised in poverty by a single parent because the other fine upstanding hetero parent has abandoned them.

But, hey! Don't let that get in the way of your crazy fantasies. Anything's better than a child that's been abandoned by his or her bio parents being raised by another set of loving parents, huh?

What fantasy? In my original post I did refer to "deadbeat straight parents", so I was being honest and realist. It is gay marriage and gay parenting that is the fantasy.

I had a feeling you'd be the first one here.

It's odd you make that claim when compared to your comments on the thread about the two gay foster parents charged with molesting their children.

In that case you have no problem condemning all gays and lesbians.

But if any of us point out some of the cracks in the "sacred institution of marriage" you keep thumping, we get told we're not being fair.

A good childhood friend had a term for stuff like that. "Bulldinky".

many thanks EJohn. A friend and teacher actually sent me this story. I told him I was going to post it and speculated on who'd be the first to ask why this is on a G&L thread.

Color me embarrassed that THAT topic hasn't come up yet. But it is interesting to note the subject brought up in the very first post of this thread. When did this country start saying that stating a fact is the same as attacking someone?

What do you propose... going door-to-door to the homes of gay people raising children, and snatch them away? Fines or prison time to gay people who dare to raise children, even their own?

Or maybe you're like most people on your side of the issue, who seem to believe that by banning same-sex marriages, gay people will simply lose all motivation to raise children? That families headed by same-sex couples will simply vanish if they cannot marry?

Whatever you may think of "queer parenting", you have absolutely no recourse to stop it, marriage equality or not. There isn't a damn thing you can do, ever. Get used to it.

Gays and lesbians aren't the subject of this thread or the topic of the story.

Deadbeat parents are.

But it's always easier for you to demonize us than it is to look in your own house.

DNF, please allow me one off-topic question:
You profess to be a Christian. On your judgement day, when you stand before the Lord, and he asks-
"DNF, when all those gay posters on Topix were blaspheming me and my Father, why did you not defend us?
How will you answer?

Daily Horoscope for May 21

Scorpio

It's a frustrating and rather disappointing day because you have to cope with delays and setbacks to your plans. A travel arrangement may have to be postponed or there could be a hitch about something connected with education. You're also feeling subdued and tired, and you're longing to spend some time on your own although this may not be possible. Don't worry, this difficult mood will soon blow over.
