This actually makes me sad. I know PD wasn't everyone's cup of tea - just don't watch her then. I personally can't stand Gordon Ramsay, so I just don't watch him.
I see this as a teachable moment. The woman grew up in the South where those bigoted terms were (and are) de rigueur. She came from what she knew, what she was taught - so teach her (or let her teach herself) something else. To excoriate the woman as an example of what's wrong with the Southern mentality is a bit harsh.
There is no place in our culture to use those terms - but I do find it a bit disingenuous that "that's so gay" (used in a negative sense) is heard quite a bit up here from "us Yankees". Also, it's been quite fine to make fun of her Southern speech patterns and idioms.
Someday, we (hopefully) will move away from these derogatory terms. Until then, let's keep reminding those who fall into bad habits (and that is exactly what they are) that they are doing that. Reinforce the fact that these aren't acceptable any more, but don't put Paula on the cross when so many more deserve to be up there.

It's too bad that her words came back to haunt her. Someone in the spotlight should have known better. Freedom of speech is grand, but it does come with repercussions in certain situations. We can't always say out loud everything we think. Sometimes our voices need a filter!

It's easy to say that somebody "should have known better." In that part of the country, that was how people spoke. I had a friend in the Air Force who used that language and when I objected to it, he said (paraphrasing after 40+ years) "That's just how we talk. We don't mean anything by it." And of course, blacks (from my experience, usually older ones) routinely use that same word but they get a pass.

Well that word should never be used by either race in music or comedy. Being from the south when I was growing up it was always used I never liked it but it is one of those old words that will die once the generation of that era die off.

She isn't looking for "her 2 minutes of fame"...she is already famous. She is famous for her cooking show, her cookbooks, and her appearance in commercials. It's a shame she wasn't smart enough to keep her mouth shut. She had a good thing going.

I agree, but that obviously doesn't make it right.

(And if you are going to talk about food, you may be interested in knowing that I am just recently past the midway point of a 15 year study to see if it's possible to live on only beer and pizza (and it's going very well !:)))

And the troll isn't satisfied with his own little "Gay Cafe". Here he comes, a lonely stalker, posting where he can get attention with his little unregistered, multi-usernames.
So, we have read your little remarks of stupidity, R1. Now slither off to your Grandpa Dizzo persona, and act like a real "straight L0ser". Enjoy the Gay Cafe....where "ALL" the straight guys hang.

I've met Southerners who have used slurs and make jokes but not sure if they are truly prejudice and I believe Paula when she says she doesn't have anything against anyone. Paula Deen should have known better though. Sometimes people say stupid things that can come back and bite them. I'm glad she apologized though and it seemed sincere.

Catfish are known for their feeding frenzy on a full moon night. Chicken liver, nightcrawler worms, cut bait, and stink baits work wonders. The worse the bait smells, the better it works. Too bad the freaks here spend all their time here oilin' and packin' like a bunch of gaytarded losers.
