VCU Coach Says He Was Fired Because He Was Gay

VCU women’s volleyball coach James Finley is fighting to get his job back after he says he was fired because he is gay.

Finley, 52, has filed a complaint with VCU’s Office for Institutional Equity. University spokesperson Pamela D. Lepley said an investigation is being conducted and must be completed within 45 days. The findings will be provided to Finley and VCU President Michael Rao. The coach said he would consider taking legal action if not reinstated

He was fired on Nov. 19, one day after the Rams lost in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament. The Rams finished 25-6, their best winning percentage (.806) in Finley’s eight-year tenure and their first season in the A-10.

Finley said when he met with athletic director Ed McLaughlin and executive associate athletic director Jeff Cupps, they told him their decision not to renew his contract — which expires Dec. 31 — had nothing to do with his won-loss record. The coach, who is 151-116, said he was told that they would help him find a new job; McLaughlin said Cupps would even write a letter of recommendation.

That’s not good enough for Finley. Over Thanksgiving break, Finley said, “My husband and I were talking about it, and we can’t just walk away.”

At best, and -- quite spine-chillingly -- they're behaving like demons from hell. Nothing about what they do shows any morality, any moral compass, any goodness, or any christlike quality. Nothing at all. Scary.

How right you are. Christians? Oh, I doubt it, if they are they are NOT paying attention. A lot of them CROW about NOT being religious which is stranger yet as to where their hate comes from.

Did you ever walk by a house on your block where a real mean dog lived? It was always tied up. No one ever played with it. It prowled the yard and paced the fence, angry, impatient, bored. If you walked anywhere near the place, the dog would explode in furious barking, throwing itself against the fence till you were out of sight, but often it would bark even after you were around the corner. That reminds me of our cranky pals above.

If this forum allows them to vent a bit, to keep them from climbing a tower with a high powered weapon and a bag o' bullets, so be it.

I have my reservations about this story, from what I've read elsewhere, VCU actually has a fairly decent track record in this area and for this to happen would be out of character. This story came out a few days ago, but there really hasn't been anything after the initial allegation.

Great contribution, and thank you. Indeed, dogs are disturbingly senseless when they're really vicious as you described: Nonstop, as if it will accomplish anything, they continue to bark for *long periods of time*... and don't, um, ever learn in the slightest. Your analogy is excellent.

I agree, too, that venting online can stave offline violence.
