I've never understood the term "bible-thumping".

Never saw one of those over-Zealous "ministers" pounding on a bible to make a point? I have.

You need to watch one of those fire-and-brimstone preachers in action then. The way they swing that Bible around it's definitely a weapon. And they claim their god is the god of Love and Peace!

No

Actually, that's not what many of them say, because that's not what the bible says in many places.

I can see that you actually haven't read much of teh bible either.

I don't do either one. But before I left religion in the dust bin of history, where it should be, I studied at the local Lutheran Seminary. One of the things we did was to visit all sorts of churches, and watch how the services were conducted. I went to quite a few evangelical services where the "minister" pounded on his bible to make a point. Not my style, but many folks like that sort of thing.

No, I never have.

And I've been a member of, and regularly attending, Lutheran churches and UCC churches, for more than 50 years, and that simply is not part of our faith tradition. I've never even heard one of those so-called "fire & brimstone" sermons because it's just not part of our tradition, as it apparently is with some other denominations.

Our pastor ends his sermons with those famous words that Martin Luther used to end his sermons with which are: "More Bier ! Katie, more Bier !:)"

That's because you're being deliberately stupid and unfunny again, and other people are making the error of replying seriously again.

Foxy, for a guy who claims to be worldly, you are awfully ignorant of a lot of things.

Step out of your cozy little bubble and experience things. You might learn something.

He knows perfectly well what it means. Why do you blithely accept such BS as what he avers?

Think "pulpit banging".

What's usually sitting open on the pulpit?

Now picture "camp meetings" with some hairy-eared "preachers" marching back and forth at the front of the meeting, bible in one hand, exhorting, declaring, declaiming, waving their open hand or fist in the air and, from time to time .... wait for it ... thumping the bible in their other hand.

Get it now?

I've been to a lot of Lutheran churches over teh past 50 years, and that is just NOT in the Lutheran tradition. There's no "thumping" or pounding or "fire and brimstone" sermons.

Furthermore, our church does not have a bible in the pulpit, nor a single one in teh pews, a fact I have complained about from time to time.

Think Burt Lancaster in Elmer Gantry or Claude Akins in the original version of Inherit the Wind. You need a Pentecost from the South for your best thumping.

I know who both of those actors are, and I've seen them both in many movies, and series, but I have never seen either of those movies.

But I have a pretty good idea of the kind of preacher you're talking about.

But as I said, that style of preaching is just not in the Lutheran tradition, and I have not encountered it in the many churches of various denominations that I have attended over the years.

Although I have been to the churches of many denominations over the years, Pentecostal churches, nor Southern Baptist churches are among them.

That kind of preaching is as alien to me as a meeting of the local Democrats Club (EPE).
