It seems to me that people who don't believe in the bible actually know more about what's really in it than people who do.

Not really. It is apparent on these very threads that most of the people who quote the Bible have not read it all, and do not understand it.

To most Christians the Bible is like a software license. Nobody actually reads it. They just scroll to the bottom and click "I agree".

Most of what is quoted by the unchurched ia either quoted out of context or lacks sound exegesis. The Bible never condones homosexuality. I have seen all kinds of creative attempts to explain away its clear prohibitions against it.

I've seen arguments on both sides, but never get involved for 2 main reasons:

1. I don't know Hebrew or Greek.
2. It doesn't really matter to me one way or another. People use the quotes against gay people, and that's what matters.

The Bible says people who pick up sticks on a Saturday should be tortured to death. When I say that, fundies often challenge me. So, I prove it, with a bible quote. When I say the bible indicates the earth is flat, I prove it with quotes. As I say, people who don't believe the bible tend to know it better than those who do.

One of my favorite lines in Julia Sweeney's "Letting go of God" is something she said after really studying what's in the bible, and seeing people walking with their bibles to church, "Have you (actually) read that book!?"

Well, knowing what the Bible actually says is THE biggest reason that I don't "believe" in it...

Hmmm, in some senses of the term, they could be considered to be correct. The Queen is a figurehead. The real government is Parliment and the PM. Of course, the Brits consider the queen's head to be a very important figure, but it's not like she can rule by fiat.

Of course. If they actually tried to read it, they would be forced to see that it is loaded with contradictions and contra-factual claims.

Utterly false. I am always happy to have people check what I post in its full context, and preferably in the original Hebrew. Indeed, I frequently find myself having to tell the xians that THEY are the ones quoting out of context.

False. The Bible NEVER condemns homosexuality. Indeed it CELEBRATES the marriage of David and Johnathan. You need to read it IN CONTEXT, and in the proper Hebrew.

That's for sure especially between the old and new testaments. The Bible has been rewritten, re edited, re worded so many times I'm not even sure if it isn't right up there with Grimm's Fairy Tales.

The prohibition against picking up sticks on Saturday was a violation of the Sabbath which is part of the Jewish law against work on the Sabbath. The Law of the Sabbath was only intended to be for the Jewish nation and not intended for the Christian. It would take more space than Topix allows to explain it in detail. Isaiah 40:22 and Job 26:7 seem to indicate the Earth is a sphere. Calling the earth round predated Columbus by more than one millenium as the idea of a flat earth was not universal in the ancient world.

What you are doing is examining the Bible the way a lawyer would examine the law and try to make the law read differently from what it was intended. You look for excuses rather than reasons. If you let the Bible speak for itself and don't try to overcomplicate it a la the legal profession trying to overcomplicate laws,, it is plain to see that homosexuality is opposed by the Bible.

Silly, ignorant child. The Bible is VERY clear that the laws put forth in the Torah are to be kept FOR EVER. Are you saying that the God of the Bible lied when He said that?

And Isaiah 40:22 calls the Earth a flat disc. It does NOT say that it is a sphere. Also, Columbus (and most other people) knew that the Earth was spherical, IN SPITE of the Bible. The Pagan Greeks even calculated the diameter of the spherical Earth 3 centuries before Jesus.

Silly child, if the Bible condemned homosexuality, then HOW could it turn around and CELEBRATE the homosexual marriage of David and Johnathan?

Your ignorance comes from not understanding that in the Hebrew, Leviticus is clearly talking about acts between a man and a (male) temple prostitute - a priest of a foreign Goddess of fertility. The word translated as "abomination" in fact refers to actions that are forbidden because they are part of the worship of foreign Gods.

The best example that I can give is from Ezekiel, where it calls weeping an abomination. Now, obviously, there is nothing sinful about weeping, but the CONTEXT of the statement shows that the weeping in question is being done as part of the annual worship of the death (and subsequent resurrection) of the God Tammuz.

Of course, it is also Ezekiel that proves that the sin of Sodom had NOTHING to do with homosexuality.

So, the stuff in Leviticus was only intended to be for the Jewish nation and not intended for the Christian, either?

It says "circle", circles are flat. And it also says the heavens are like a tent. And they are not. They are almost 100% empty space.

You obviously know nothing of the distinction between the Church and the nation of Israel in the Bible. The New Testament in many places tells us that the Church is not subject to the ceremonial laws of the New Testament. The word disk an also be interpreted as a sphere. The Hebrew word means round.
