Religion Begats Prejudice

Religion Begats Prejudice

There are 1422 comments on the newsweek.washingtonpost.com story from Aug 2, 2008, titled Religion Begats Prejudice. In it, newsweek.washingtonpost.com reports that:

Far from my religion tempering my prejudices, racial prejudice was actually instilled in me by my evangelical Christian church. I grew up in North Carolina in what we call the Bible Belt. My church taught me that segregation was the will of God and quoted the Bible to prove it. It taught me that men were by nature superior to woman and quoted the Bible to prove it. It taught me that it was o.k. to hate other religions, and especially the Jews, and quoted the Bible to prove it. It taught me that homosexual persons were either mentally sick or morally depraved and, of course, quoted the Bible to prove it. So the idea that being religious might make one less prejudiced is a fantasy. It appears to make people more prejudiced, or at the least, not to confront their prejudices.

Mereck, I just want to thank you for your succinct, in-depth summation of this writer's ideas. Without your explanation of the difference between beget and begat, I don't think I would have truly comprehended his shallow, unthinking ideas about racial, religious and sexual prejudice. How simple-minded of me!

(BTW, in case you don't get it, I am speaking in Sarcasm, the ancient language of the Sarcasts.)

Rick in Kansas, I agree. Alas, many religions do seem to be more the source of prejudice than the cure for it. I pray for the day when this is no longer the case.

Author's Note: If there are any typos in this comment, live with it. No one is perfect.

Finally, a person with intelligence!! I've been saying for years that all religions are poisonous to one's health!! They teach everything from hate to bigotry; and find somewhere in that damn bible to quote from it!!

Oh by the way. My savior and spouse is Jesus.
But I refuse to use the term "christian" as it has been usurped by Satan.

"The divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity. Nowhere in the Gospels do we find a precept for Creeds, Confessions, Oaths, Doctrines, and whole carloads of other foolish trumpery that we find in Christianity."
- John Adams

"Twenty times in the course of my late reading
have I been upon the point of breaking out,'This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it!'"
--John Adams, A Biography in His Own Words

"I have recently been examining all the known superstitions of the world, and do not find in our particular superstition [Christianity] one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology."

Religions are not the problem. It is the misuse of religions.

People twist their religions into justification for their hatred and mistreatment of people they don't like.

you can make the bible say anything you want it to. you decide whether it's fact or parable. and then you put your idea of what it mean,, just skip religion altogether.

Religion is bad but following the word of GOD will cause no one to suffer.
Show me how by following just the Ten Commandments could hurt, we would be a much better nation if we followed them.
The lack of knowledge or wrong intertputation of HIS word is what gives "religion" a bad name.
Look at the radical muslim faith where they are to kill non-believers, now GOD doesn't condone that just man. The nation of islam was started by a dope head and they killed each other in order to be in charge.
You need to know or at least check out what GOD really said in HIS word not preachers like the rev wright that was always wrong, that is what is wrong with religion, man puts himself as the head of it instead of listening to GOD.

I posted this article because its author served 24 years as an Episcopal Bishop and is a prominent author on the subject of contemporary Christian theology. Your qualifications other than functional illiteracy, irrational hatred and an inept ability to cut and paste would be what exactly???

John Spong is heretic. His views (maybe not on this subject) but on anything dealing with Christian Theology are so far off base they are not even in the ballpark of Christian Theology.

He has consistently denied the virgin birth and resurrection of our Lord, just to name two of his heresies.

Sure there are churches like the one he describes but it is a gross generalization to lump all Christian Churches or Denominations into that pot.

So we should look at god's word to see what she says? And where do we find that? Surely not in that book of evildoing that some religions call the bible. What a horrible thing to read, much less follow as some sort of moral guide. The main character in that book is responsible for killing, torturing, incest, child sacrifice (oh, there was a reprieve - I'll bet that kid really loved his dad!), slavery, demeaning of women, every ugly thing that humans do is in there, condoned, nay, encouraged and demanded, by god. No thanks, I think I'll look elsewhere for moral guidance, like inside my own heart and my brain.

Maybe where the hate and bigotry come from is when people have "got Religion" but have no faith.

I always thought Bishop Spong was indeed a thinker unlike "Think Again" who only pretends to be one. And his opinions on the virgin birth and resurrection are those of an intelligent man.

"NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope."

Let's burn him at the stake!!!
