Saw the weather radar for that one. interesting one is that it was a classical occlusion front swinging into the mountains from the E.

The resulting oreographic rainfall dumped the entire content of the occlusion onto the E.rockies making a real mess. Interesting thing is that this same effect happened last year in the hills above Macynlleth & Aberystwyth, Wales (UK for those elsewhere).

The bit that made this particular frontal rain an oddbod was the fact that low pressure systems usually track W-E but this one mostly stayed put.
Systems of this type (with a system that acts like a marble on a conveyor belt), is a feature of climate mode#3.
This mode features a travelling monsoonal flow (not fixed in latitude), with developing cells as a result peeling away from the monsoon and decaying @ some distance from the monsoonal flow. As the monsoonal flow is travelling from W to E the developing cell parks itself over one spot and merely grows in diameter with time.

This "flooding marble" low pressure cell usually gives its flooding rainfall total in the corezone of the cell (a mite wet in the missisippi tributaries this year), but in this case the occlusion in the filling cell hit a mountain range and all the fun & games was NE. of the corezone.

Another "flooding marble" cell hit Austria & the Czech republic earlier this spring. This year the UK has been cool but dry.

Another almost developed over the Tibetan plateau but the Himalayas got in the way.

ps. Old film zone. "Hard rain" featuring Denzel washington for a good themed background movie.

We remain in climate mode#3 (started April 2012), and the earth has warmed enough for the mode to begin to wrap around & become symmetrical.

Have a nice day: Ag
