RHEA COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING -May 21, 2013 - FULL VIDEO

May 22, 2013 Full story: daytonherald.net 15

This county commission meeting appeared to be just another regular meeting until it came time to vote for the purchase of land to build a new jail. As we all know, the jail and the extensive jail overcrowding problem have plagued the county for the better part of two years. After several core drilling tests, architect footprints and over $200,000 on studies, the county commission had narrowed the proposed properties down to two. Those properties were the Welch property located on 16th Ave. and the Louallen property located on Manufactures Road. These two properties for consideration for purchase by the county were on the agenda. Finally it seemed that the commission was ready to buy land which would satisfy the state's mandate of a "good faith" showing of doing something to fix the jail overcrowding problem. I thought Ms. Fisher was way smarter than this. Just goes to show if you hang around dirty people long enough, you yourself can become one of them.

I was at the meeting and I have to say that mr. hollin is the worst excuse for a politician I have ever seen. his attempt to derail anything having to do with mr. louallen is so obvious it's quite funny. and ms fisher surprised me also. I believe that only about half that board is truly concerned about the tax payers they represent. the rest are only there for their own personal interest....shame on them. props to mr. smith and mr. taylor for standing up for whats right. mr. hollin, you should learn from them.

Rhea county politicians are falling in to the same old bad habits they fall in to. As a Rhea County voter this is what I think my commissioners should do. FIRST remove the names out of your mind on what property belongs to WHO. Then ask yourself this simple question..... Do we purchase land that is prone to flooding and would obviously need quite a bit of fill dirt before building or do we purchase land that is ready to go and not prone to flooding? You see? When you take the good ole Rhea-style politics out of it and stop doing favors for your buddies but do WHAT IS LOGICAL AND PRACTICAL and to say the least COST-EFFECTIVE then that is making a decision for the GOOD OF YOUR CONSTITUENTS. You county officials are making your jobs harder than what it needs to be, not to mention dragging your feet on this issue by refusing to work for your voters and instead constantly choosing to do what makes your buddies happy. Grow up... you are not in a high school clique anymore. You are responsible for millions of dollars and the financial livelihood of Rhea County, not to provide a robust financial livelihood for your pals.

So you don't think Louallen is in this for HIS own financial gain? I think YOU need to step back and review. Common sense will tell you a few things perhaps!

smft, common sense tells me I don't give a rats a$$ who is to gain, his property is the best bang for the buck. do you even know the two properties? one is ready to build on the other is a huge low spot in the ground. if this property was owned by anyone else the deal would have already been done. it's nothing but personal vendettas and I am tired of them wasting tax payers money. they've already spent over $200,000 and the louallen property past all the test. buy it and let's move on!

smft, since you seem to think you are in the know......why don't you enlighten us on the properties involved and why the louallen property isn't the best choice..........waiting....... ..

With some people the facts and truth can stare them in the face, but simply because of the name/person, it will never be accepted. Yet they want to complain about everything anyone tries to do to better the community. With some people ya just can't win. I agree with you "broke". I'm waiting to see a legitimate intelligent explanation as well.

Hope your not holding your breath while waiting for a reply! Lol! I was there and it was obvious that this was once again a ploy to stall the purchase of the property on manufactures road. The really funny thing is that Vincents property was presented by Mr Thacker 2 or 3 months ago and the price if I remember right was $500,000.00! Someone asked how much he was asking for it tuesday night but not one of them would respond!! To make it worse, Vincent was there but no one asked him!!! These people are a joke and we must vote each and every one of them out the next election. But I doubt they will run again. They have broke the county and will want to get out as fast as they can. Every one should be at the public hearing and demand answers from them! I know I will be there!!

I don't think I said HIS property was not the best choice of the "choices", and again I say "choices" You have no idea what I know, or don't know, but I have seen enough to know who is greasing who's palm.

In this taxpayer's opinion, the new justice center should remain where it is right by the court house. Problem solved, no millions spent we don't have and nobody gets rich off land and construction contracts. If you need to update, then do it but don't spend millions with this too.

build on top of the old jail and it is built for that. this commission will never come together. i hope they dont do anything till after the next election. i know of 4 people who are going to run against people in there now. if so you could see a lot of good things comming fordward. the first is just plain common sense. just some words of thought.
