We used to live north of that area. There's no place for a dam. Wheeling Island is exactly that, an island in the Ohio River between Ohio and WV. When the Ohio floods, it's relentless! Back in 1990, the damage to Wheeling Island caused by a flood brought the then-govenor Gaston Caperton to tears.

Well then, who's nutty idea was it to build on an island in the middle of a massive river that drains 3 states? Maybe they should buy the land up and turn it into a park, then.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, it just seems kind of like it was poor planning.

Wheeling Island's history goes way back past when it was in the state of Virginia prior to the civil war, and most likely when the USA was founded, been inhabited since then. For better understanding you need to hit the history books and know over 200 years of history is not gonna dissappear just like that. Ths place has survived multitudes of floods.

I was just surfing and found this thread from a few yrs. ago, some predicting the end of us here on the Island. Just an FYI, still here, The Island was settled before America was a country, Roebling built our suspension bridge here before he built the Brooklyn bridge, Oldest still being used of it's kind. The last battle of the revolutionary war was fought here. George Washington surveyed the land here long before he was a General or a President. Wheeling and the Island was a big part of our country's history. Read about,Pierre Joseph CĂ©loron de Blainville and the lead plates he buried claiming land for the French.. They never found the one buried here..... Lots more great stuff too..
