Sorry to hear about the fire. I remember when Bud and his family lived there. He was my Sunday school teacher at General Baptist Church. He had a nice family. Hope the building can be rebuilt.

Actually no that is not true. It was 10 oclock in the morning and most were probably at work. And so the ones whom responded had to come from work and also the ones from other towns that responded had to come from other towns.

You know Little Miss Sunshine you really should not put down anyone who volunteers on any volunteer fire department. You do not even know half of what they are risking just by doing it. I am sure or you would never say that. And believe me I could fill you in.

I can kind of understand why you would feel that way then, the ones drinking shouldn't have responded at all in my opinion. I don't think they are supposed to, I mean common since tells me that.

But there are good people everyday in the various little towns around here that can't afford paid departments whom do put things on the line and risk things. Its just a subject near to my heart right now, and it kind of makes me stand up for them. And I am sure there are many good ones in Chaffee too.

little mrs sunshine,

I would hope that since your fire things have changed in the chaffee fd. It is NOT a common scene to have drunks show up with the fire department now days and if it were to still
happen then the pd needs to be informed.
Let us all remember that not EVERY house can be saved. There is a choice that has to be madein if it is worth risking a firefighters life in saving only possessions.

First of all it did not take 30 min. for us to get there. second if you have a personal issue with the way we fight fires then take your self down to city hall and fill out an application and join the dept. then you can do the job your way since you seem to know all the answers.

I am very sorry to hear about your house Mrs Sunshine. I know when bad things happens you want to automatically blame someone. Because the hurt is strong, the depression from the events are strong and life changing events can really alter someones reality. Back on January 24th I posted the following about volunteer firefighters. It will explain why I am another one that thinks they should be looked up to and not put down. These are people that really have good intentions at heart. Or they wouldn't volunteer.

Actually I am glad I seen this post. There are some facts about volunteer firefighters in the state of missouri that people need to know about. I have contacted some polititians to get some things changed and maybe if others are aware they will do the same. Because I doubt they listen to just one person.

Most small towns do not pay their volunteers. But I do know a few years ago someone told me Chaffee's got twenty or so a meeting. The post above said that if a volunteer is injured the city of chaffees insurance would cover the injured. Actually this is not usually the case. Most fire departments carry workmans comp insurance. Which as of 2005 they are not required to, but most do. If a volunteer is injured their medical bills are paid, but unlike someone, if they are hurt in on their regular job, they don't recieve 2/3 of their wages they would be missing out on they only recieve forty dollars a week because this is the minimum the state requires them to pay. And there is nothing to base the wage on. Back before 2005 the injured would have recieved 2/3 of what a local paid volunteer department recieved. Because the state is more into protecting the insurance companies than protecting the volunteers and people in this state these laws were changed..

So say you have a volunteer that has a wife and kids, if they are seriously injured their whole life is going to change. So before you bash any volunteer fire department you need to know what these people are risking. They are risking everything for nothing if they are injured.

There is something called the second injury fund that can be used in cases like this. But to collect it you would have to have a lawyer to file. It is called second wage job loss.

Also another thing they are not protected from if they are seriously injured is job security. It the fireman had a good job when he was injured but is not well enough to go back before the FMLA leave is up they will loose their job. There are laws in missouri to protect volunteers from losing their job if they are on the department, or if they leave work to answer calls. But there are no laws to protect them if they are injured and the injurys keep them from working more than twelve weeks. There should be a law where they can not lose their job period.

Why should the insurance companies keep being protected. What would the state do if all the volunteers quit? Let the state burn down...no they would have to have paid. Would be cheaper for them just to take care of their volunteers.

I think something needs to be done about it. But at least medically they are covered. But really take the time and think about what they are risking it is alot. Most think it wont happen to them. But thats what my loved on thought too. To late to help him but if we can get things changed to help anyone else that is my goal.
**********

So technically I think we should just always be thankful that we have volunteers. And yes this is a cause I feel strongly about. I did hear back from Bev B's office and she really is looking into getting things changed but never hurts for more to be aware.
