Actually I do volunteer indeed. Do you? The thread is directed at the department, which is 95% volunteer. The grant doesn't give the chief a penny. My point is simple. Don't like the FD guys? Volunteer, take the training, run the calls. Don't just hide and gripe. Dear.
Incorrect....they have several paid full time people and about 90% of the department is on the payroll as part time. Very few people volunteer. They just don't have the volume to justify that many paid members.

And the citizens of Chilhowie keep seeing their water bills go up and up and up in order to pay for ** Something **.

What is that they keep saying about the morals of governments on the news?

I was told that it was to pay for their new dress uniforms which is their latest spending spree item. Don't know what was wrong with their old ones but I guess when you are on a spending spree, then the sky is the limit.

We were talking about just that at our club meeting the other night.

Don't like the response time? Go take your training.... drop everything your doing and go effectively take care of a multi system trauma patient. Don't like the grant? Go find out the facts, and find out what the grant was actually for. Don't like the chief? Go follow him around a day or two and see what he is all about. Don't like the guys that wash those fire trucks? Go follow those guys around. Paid or volunteer they dedicate their life to the citizens of Chilhowie, Saltville and Marion getting paid less than most people do at McDonalds without any type of benefits. I actually know a few of the guys that have to work two or three other jobs just to try and make ends meet. While everyone is sleeping at home with there loved ones, some of those fire truck washers are probably out, with out hesitation grabbing up a lifeless baby trying there best to save his or her life, or taking a mouthful from a typical piece of crap who is demanding to be taken to the hospital because their toe is hurting. The guys at that department might just take a little pride in what they do and the department they represent. Im sure CFD could use some more volunteers, so the time that most people spend bashing CFD could actually go put in a application and help them out.

You are right. These Ass Wipes have no idea what we do. Makes me sick to even have to serve them. Not a one of them is worth our efforts. I'm gired of having to get up in the middle of the night to keep saving these ungrateful cryers.

I have yet to hear of them asking for anyone (to volunteer) and who wants to work for Haynes?

They make pretty good money actually and DO have the same benefits that the other town employees do.

Volunteers? They don't want volunteers. They only want those that are willing to give up every waking minute of their lives and will conform to exactly what Haynes and CFD wants them to be. Many that have tried to volunteer have basically been told their services aren't needed if they can't meet all the requirements....36 hours of call time plus 20% of fires and wrecks. You only find out these requirements though if you are actually lucky enough for them to review your application with rarely happens. These requirements are only attainable for those that don't have full time jobs or "work for the fire department." This is how they keep outsiders are bay and control who comes in and who doesn't.

I don't see people beating down the doors to get in so you would think any type of contribution would be appreciated. However, that is far from being the case. If you aren't willing or able to give them nearly every waking minute then you are an outcast and will be asked to leave.

They are a small town department trying to act like a city department. They don't even recognize the fact that EMS makes up probably 90% of their call volume, which isn't much to begin with. They only want to be known as a FIRE department. Basically they are an EMS service that plays with fire on occasion. Sad, just downright sad.

Two places I have noticed this. Their web site sux big time. You use to be able to go there and get all the info and pictures of everything that was happening within a day of it happening. Then every issue of the local papers, Smyth Co, Wash Co, Bristol and even the Roanoke times and WCYB TV had stories and pictures of everything they were doing, again within a day or so of it happening. It was as if that fire department was the biggest news maker in SW VA. Then Nothing! They put a clamp on any and all news coming out of there. And it wasn't only news and pictures of their fires and accidents but also wonderful stories and pictures of their training, community events, or just human interest stories. There was always something somewhere every few days about what they were doing. Now they have gone underground for some reason. Whatever's going on, they sure have gone way down hill when it comes to the transparency and openess with news and pictures on what they are doing that they use to share with the public. Maybe Boswell shut that down like he shut bringing horses through town down.

Checked their web site for info and pics of the 107 head-on and Nothing! No story, no pics. As a matter of fact, the last thing on there was two from Sept 20 with one showing a dark pic of something and a lame excuse for good information.
Question: I am told that all the firefighters with years of experiance and training have left or been dismissed. Why?

Could be, the CFD decided it wasn't a good idea to put all those pics and stories out there. They're in the firefighting business, not the news business, and they can get sued big time for putting wreck pictures, etc out there unless they're really careful. Even then, they get got criticized for snapping pictures instead of working the scene, even when there's plenty of them there to do both. Bottom line is that it's not cfds responsibility to give you pictures and details of fires and wrecks. Subscribe to the paper or call and gripe to the tv stations.

Memory serves that all the news articles and pictures on everything that was in the local newspapers and TV when you people were transparent to the tax payers in your dealings were submitted by you people at the CFD. Hummmm…. Okay, not to embarrass you, let’s move on…

----- can get sued big time for putting wreck pictures, etc. out there

Being one of those tax payers, I followed, with great interest, all those CFD articles in the local newspapers and TV. Memory serves again that around 90 percent of everything published was about your training, public events and contributions to the safety of the public at large. How do you get sued for being transparent about your community involvement and education? Hummmmm, Again.

----- it's not cfds responsibility to give you pictures and details of fires and wrecks

You conveniently forgot the 90 percent of transparency covering that 90 percent of coverage that was about your community involvement, education and training the tax payers use to enjoy. Hummmm, yet again????

----- Subscribe to the paper or call and gripe to the tv stations.

I do and see that the articles YOU at the CFD use to submit have all of a sudden stopped. The paper(s) and TV used YOUR submissions; they didn’t make them up themselves. Hummmmm, Again with a Yawn.

Your lame attempt to “Spin” why you people have closed your transparency has been exposed. Got to get up much earlier in the morning to try and “Spin” your way out of what is evident.

As a tax payer, I use to enjoy seeing what my money was paying for. I also enjoyed being educated on what training you people were doing and what the specific details involved in that training entailed. It used to make me feel comfortable that it was more than a bunch of cowboys winging it. My wife, who has heart disease, was very enthused when she read the article and saw the TV report on your new monitors a couple of years back. Our little girl was overjoyed seeing her picture in front of the fire truck at your Halloween thing, also a couple of years back. That is why we made a donation back then to the department on top of our taxes that go to your department.

Your transparency back then made us feel involved. Then you went cold, nothing! And then you come on here in a failed attempt to “SPIN” it. That set off bells and alarms like it does when these gangster politicians try to do the same with their cover-ups. You people went silent around a year ago because of something yet undisclosed. No one stops a successful public relations program for no reason and then tries to “SPIN” their way out of it. Except for our tax money going to you, this family has withdrawn our financial support for now because we don’t send nor can we afford to send support out to unknowns.

Ya ever think that, maybe the guy that was taking the pictures and writing the articles moved, quit, or died? Not everything is a conspiracy. As far as taxpayers having complete transparency to everything going on in government, try that with your water department, garbage crew, whatever. Demand they post pictures of every job they do, every dead animal they scrape off the roads, every pile of garbage they pick up when the bag breaks.

Join the department and take the pictures yourself.
