El Dorado fire-vehicle crash leads to debate on median

An El Dorado Fire Department vehicle was damaged Christmas night when it struck a median on South West Avenue en route to an emergency call, prompting the mayor to consider removing the median.

I'm surprised there haven't been more accidents there. It's not safe in broad daylight, let alone at night. An example of a beautification project gone wrong. Should have kept it to the sidewalks. Some of the "sidewalk trees" impair vision while driving too.

Why not just build a overhead walkway like the church down the street? i guess that would have cost a dollar more.

I understand all the reasons the median was put in, but I have to admit, every time I drive through that area, I'm afraid that I'm going to hit it. And what happened to the trees that were once there? Did vehicles knock them down? I like progress, but I'm starting to think this was a bad idea.

The reasoning for the median was a good idea....to protect students crossing the road, however it should have been several feet smaller. Whoever came up with the idea to plant trees in the flower beds was a idiot, no two ways about it. The trees were taken out by a car or truck.

Awww, several thousand cars a day pass along that median without mishaps. The idiots are those drivers that run over the median!!! Hell, we have just as many hits on power poles in El Do and they are not even in the street!!

If you drive in Eldorado you take your life in your hands. We have people driving here that shouldn't have a license beside running over the median they have no idea what a turning lane is for

If you look, the road is actually a couple of inches WIDER where the median is. It doesn't stick out into the driving lanes at all.

The trees were taken out by a vehicle once. Then they were replaced and taken out by another vehicle. Hence their final removal.

You have to remember, 18 wheelers and other larger vehicles have to travel through there too.

Students were lucky. If a tree was taken out twice, it could have just as well as been a student or any person. They were just lucky. So I'm not sure where your reasoning is going. That intersection is not safe. So when you have to park across the street from the convention center because they do not have adequate parking, you're putting your life at risk every time you have to cross that street.

That's like making Brookshire's customers park across the street by Johnny B's. I don't think that would last very long.

The conference center does have adequate parking. Such facilities I'm other towns (Shreveport and Hot Springs) have similar layouts, requiring people to cross streets when events are being held. Parking is not an issue.

The "reasoning" you fail to see is that the median of trees is supposed to encourage people to slow down. When you are so selfish to the point that you must save 10 seconds to break the law by not yielding to pedestrians, such objects are used as protection. Therefore, if you are too short-sighted to see that the trees help encourage people to slow down so PEOPLE DON'T GET RAN OVER, it is evident YPU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.
