They always use the scare tactic. "If it don't pass more departments will close!" That's BS!! Stop wasting money! These VOL department have all new cell phones that the department pays for... no fire lights for personal cars... no radios provided by the departments... If they are hurting that bad then stop spending money! There is no need for a department to pay the cell phone bill for everyone. They used the scare tactic in Beckley with a hotdog give away and it worked! Dumbass locals voted yes because they got a hotdog! Lol.
The money handed out is not fair. Just because the smaller departments don't have as many people to serve they get less money. Being a smaller fire department doesn't get you a deal on a new truck. Learn to maintain what you have. It's stupid to pass another tax when you have people giving every year to a fire fee. You people need to call and get the amount you'll owe. It's going to be more that $48 a year!!

This will also be a trickle down effect. How much will businesses like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, The Greenbrier all the businesses in the county going to pay? They will just pass on the increase to the consumer and all the prices will go up so we are not only paying a tax increase but as consumers will be paying more for everything we buy. Food, clothing, resturaunts even at the Pump's. So tell me, how much does this election really cost the taxpayers? "NO NEW TAXES".......

It is very obvious that no one here has ever been in the situation that these men and women put themselves in for you. Everyone says no new tax until it is their home on fire or their family trapped in a vehicle. Then its oh please help us drive faster, work faster. Well when we dont have the equipment to do it in time i hope you remember that you saved that 50 bucks on your taxes. Its very clear what we can use the money for and what we can not. It is not rocket science but ya know what i'm sure every one of you know what is best for the entire county.

(gbcfire) if this so important to have this tax to fund the fire departments why in the heck can they not come up with a realistic fee and quit lying to everybody? and split the money equal between the departments . make it so everybody can live with it!!!!!one department said on tv a nozel cost over a 1000 dollars tell me how often you have to replace a nozel quit the crap tell the people the ( truth ). or would the truth hurt you!!

They are not lying...the fire coordinator will make around $30,000 a year. The remainder of the $100,000 goes to that operation. It will be this person's job to seek out the best cost, by research and bidding, to get the equipment cost as low as possible. The money is distributed evenly, to a point. So much of the money is divided evenly, then the remainder is based on that one departments tax base. Lewisburg and WSS Fire made sure it happened that way because the original plan would have dumped far more into those two cities and far less into the rural communities. That is not what either of these departments are about, and want to help everyone.

A nozzle does cost a good bit of money, so $1,000 is pretty accurate. And no, they are not replaced every year unless they become damaged, but for examples sake, lets say that a department has to replace 50% of their nozzles because they are worn out or damaged. One engine has at least 3 pre-connected and as many as 10 more on the truck. So, for this example, 5 need replaced. That is $5,000. When the department is only operating on $30,000 a year, that is a big chunk of the money you may need to put gear on a fire fighter, buy firehose, or make an insurance payment.

This levy isn't about lying to you, the truth is out there in black and white. What you chose to read and believe is up to you. No matter what, you will still want to see them there as fast as possible when something happens to you. This levy will ensure that can happen with the appropriate equipment. The fee is very realistic and I would think most would be happy to pay $100 a year to ensure that a vital service was available.

Levy Supporter I have paper work That say's he will get 20 per cent of the 18860000.00 which come to 377000.00 and that is in black and white! and if you take 20 per cent of that it would come to 377200.00 check my math see if i am wrong.thats approximately 1886000 in (1)year of the levy. this levy starts july 1 2013 +2104 +2015 +2016 +2017 this is the beginning of the fiscal year ( if it passes ) check it out!!!and that's what you are not telling the people . along with what the real coust is going to be.

1000 for a nozzle is a little high but it does depend on the make of the nozzle. www.chiefsupply.com would be a good place for you to look at how much our equipment cost. Please keep in mind that we have to have just about all that equipment on a truck for it to be certified. I encourage you to look at the price of turnout gear especially. Even the cheapest turnout coats and pants can be as much as 800 dollars a piece. If you would like to see how much a department is spending then please go to the dept closest to you and ask to see the figures. With this levy we have drawn up the figures and would be more than happy to share them with you. Most departments meet on tuesday or thursday nights and will show you exactly why they need this levy to pass. We do not wish to pull the wool over anyone's eyes. You deserve to know the truth. So please come out and take a look at everything and make your decision from their. It is unfair to the fire depts in the county to vote no just because not all the facts have been put in front of you. Also if while visiting the fire dept you become convinced that we are trying to do a good thing ask to put in an application. Volunteers in this area are very short and all depts would welcome you. You would not only be helping others but you may also learn something that may one day save your own life.

I am not saying fire departments do not need help and I support more than one fire department but all things looked at there is no way I can support this levy!! Because it is going to hurt to many people that con not afford it with that being said if you were in the same shape as some family's I know then you just might under stand .when it hard to pay there utillity bills and buy food and sometimes medication ans can not buy it!!!!

WTF do you even care if you live in Fayette Co.? It doesn't affect you in the slightest. And you want to talk about embezzlement, what about your county? I know for a fact you had a deputy sheriff embezzling from a fire department over there, but your county still has a levy. STFU Dumbass.

gbc fire: what is obvious is that you have a vested interest in putting your hand in my pocket, but be advised that you may pull back less than you expected!
What is obvious is that VFDs have FAILED to earn the respect of their communities (and failed to be funded by their peers)and now are attempting to grab my money to fund their lavish desires through government imposed taxes.
What is obvious is that you think only you can do this hard dangerous job and not give credit to the people that started the VFDs--without pay, without government money, without complaint.
What is obvious is that to you the blood, sweat and tears that We have put into our VFDs in the past is not enough--now you demand our money.
Just so you know, I have supported my local VFD with donations that exceed the recommended fee, but this is now stopped!

Funny you should think I'm the only one who can do it. would it surprise you that over half of the members of some local departments are second and third generation volunteers. unfortunately we cannot compare the times they lived in to ours. expenses increase and insurance companies don't have sympathy. since this forum is for Alderson go to Alderson and ask them if they trust the departments there to help them. I was there during the derecho fighting everyday to help people. Alderson hasn't had for fees in years and neither dept there bills anyone for fire services. I can guarantee you that I will be paying just as much on this as anyone. but I encourage you to call your insurance company and ask how much less you would be paying if the ISO rating for your local department goes down. I would bet that you will save more than you pay if that happens and it only happens if the fire dept can upgrade the equipment they have. please call and ask I'm interested to know the answer.
