YES THIS IS A TAX AND EVERYONE INCLUDING ME AND ALL THE PEOPLE IN THE GBC FIRE DEPTS. HAS TO PAY. IF YOU PAY YOUR DUES THATS GREAT...WHAT ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBOR THAT DOESNT PAY? IS THAT FAIR...WELL NOW HE DOESNT HAVE A CHOICE. EVERYONE PAYS. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR SMALL VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPTS CLOSE THEIR DOORS? THEN YOUR INSURANCE GOES THROUGH THE ROOF. IS THAT WHAT YOU PEOPLE WANT. IT CAN HAPPEN AND IT HAS HAPPENED. YOU HAVE QUESTIONS? YOUR LOCAL FIRE DEPT WILL BE HAVING OPEN HOUSES THIS MONTH. GO TO THESE AND ASK YOUR QUESTIONS MAYBE YOU WILL REALLY SEE WHAT IS GOING ON OR MAYBE YOU WONT. THINK ABOUT IT THOUGH...CAN YOU REALLY AFFORD TO LOSE YOUR FIRE DEPARTMENT.
If the Fire Departments are in such dire straights then answer to the people of this county "WHY" wasn't this issue brought up before the general election? Apparently this situation didn't occur overnight!!! I'll not deny that Fire Departments need help but someone's timing is bad. Smells like a levy to fatten someones's pocket through more property taxes (Real and Personal). Sorry, not buying it...

What you say might be correct. But what the fire departments need to do is cut there spending. They wast all kinds of money. They run fire dept vehicles up and down the road for no reason. Most all the fire depts are volinteers. Some have EMS and Medics that are paid but that is not the fire dept. The fire chief at each dept need to oversee the daily operations of the dept and not let the volenteers just do as they desire. I know the chief is a vfolenteer also but he accepted the job and there for he needs to take care of business and cut the daily expenses. The way the money is divided is unfair. Why would Anthony Creek get more money that some other when thre is nothing there? You never here 911 on the scanner call for them or Frankfort or Renick or Quinwood. The most on the scanner is Fairlea, Williamsbury, Alderson, Clintonville and Lewisburg. This is just an unfair levy for the landowners of Greenbrier Co. Just another burden in these hard times that we don't need.

you are Right the way they want to divide the money between the departments is not right for Lewisberg to get 250000 and white sulphur to get 250000 and the rest of the fire departments get a hand full of peanuts it should be broke down equal !the county gives 15 fire depts. 1600 each year . so why is this going to be different ?

why is it not right. lewisburg and white sulphur are bigger towns with more to serve. and as far as the fire depts running up and down the road for no reason...explain what you mean by that. its not like we just go joyriding when we feel like it. maybe all of you should join the fire department for a month or so and just see how thing actually work. you all take us for granted.

Alderson is larger than Clintonville, Williamsburg and Anthony Creek and they all received more money than Alderson. Also it take just as much money for equipment in Anthony Creek as it does in Alderson. They all should receive that same amount of money.

I think it's a catch 22, don't you? If the Levy is passed we are just falling Prey for Bad Govorment Antic's, trying to create a $100,000.00 position for something the State Fire Marshals office is already supposed to be overseeing. If the Levy fails and our home's catch on fire, better break out the Garden hose because response time will be twice as long. So we're dammed if we do and dammed if we don't, right? Wrong, we as taxpayers can't be put in this position, remember your neighbor who workes everyday to support his wife and kids on minimun wage or the elderly couple on a fixed income trying to decide whether to eat or buy there medicine this Month? There is no Department in this County who needs $250,000.00 a year not to mention municipal tax and state money, to function? And What about White Sulphur Fire Department getting $250,000.00? I am sure that is because of the Expensive homes at the Greenbrier and Sporting Club. But do you know that The Greenbrier Hotel has a Fire Brigade that has 2 trucks and equipment with trained Firefighters thatis responsible for those homes and are staffed and stand ready to respond 24/7 and would be on Scene approx. 14-18 minutes sooner than WSS VFD? Why shouldn't The Greenbrier get some of that money for New eqipment, training ect? They have a limited Budget as well? Now, I said that because there are lot of ways of looking at things, Like I said before, I have been a Vol. Firefighter in this county for years. I remember doing Boot drive's, standing on the Interstate offramps for hours collecting money or freezing my butt off standing in front of Walmart or K-Mart ringing a bell around Christmas just so we could get donations. What's Happened? Seems to me like everyone's tired of working for it, what do you think?

I was in a heated discussion the other day about this topic. This person said "look how many new Fire trucks we can get with this money". Well my friend, even with a Brand new Fire truck, even if it had a Jet engine attatched to it, could not get to my house any quicker or guarantee their firefighters were anymore trained than they are now. His response was "well maybe you shouldn't live so far back in the stick's". So there you have it, there is your Mentality people. Where I choose to live is knowone's business, right? It's been my experience through the years, when we would get toned out for a call, volunteers would race to the station to see who gets there first so they could Race down the road with light's going and sirens screaming but once they got on scene they didn't know what to do and had to wait for more experienced Firefighters. I think what we are going to end up with are stations full of new truck's and equipment and not alot compitent people to run them. They'll look good in the Parade's though...lol

well lets just shut all the fire dept down and when your house is on fire or your wife husband or kids are in wreck and need help just let it burn down or leave them to parish away and see how you would like that thats my vote if everyone wants to complain let them deal with it on there own im sure in a month or two or when a house or two burn down or a life or two is lost then it would change alot of minds thanks alot

ok i got a good for you all i did a bunch of research today and i found out that westvaco, gp, and these hunting clubs DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT pay the same taxes on property as the average citzen specifically THEY DO NOT PAY THE FIRE LEVY TAX. SO I SAY THAT THE NEXT TIME IF EVER THE WOODS ARE ON FIRE LET IT BURN THEN THEY WILL BE WANTING TO PAY THE TAXES.!!!!!!!!!

To:GBC firefighter,
VFDs are not taken for granted, we just don't want your hands in our pockets
I owe you nothing for what you volunteer.
At least 4 VFDs in Greenbrier county have had legal problems(stealing, personal use of equip, misrepresenting).
My insurance rates will not change!
People I know and grew up with served their communities without complaining or whining. They did it (me included)because it was the right thing to do.
If VFDs are training their people to take money from those they serve--SHAME ON THEM!!

all i am saying is come up with a real figure on the amount of money and per property owner like $36.00 a year and for a business $50.00 and split the money equal between 15 fire departments would make more realistic . it does not make any difference if it is a $500000.00 home or 10000.00 home the fire department is doing the same job I think you would have money to spare!!!

Can anyone in greenbrier county tell me a few things:
1. How many of the county fire departmetns has not got there state money? If so, why did they not get it?
2. This levy will not generate funding for personnel, so how is it going to change anything besides buying more toys?
3. Have any of the departments said they were going to use the money the levy generates to pay for the stuff it can and then pay firefighters. The decline of volunteers is the reason every department in the state of WV has problems. The other reason is the county commissions and legislature. This whole mess could have been fixed long ago when we found out brickstreet/workers comp was a probelm.
