I would feel much better if the idea was to recruit the best regardless of what color or gender they are. I have a problem with saying, "We're going to go out and recruit some blacks and hispanics and women," when what should be said is, "We're going to go out and recruit the best and brightest and most physically fit firefighters we can."

That's not what he said. He said he wanted to reach out to those groups to "come in and test." That means come in and take the test. You flunk, well thanks for stopping by. You pass, then onto the next level of evaluation. Far from being a slam dunk guarantee of employment.

I think they already do that -- so far as I know, when they post a notice, they do not preclude blacks, hispanics, and women from reading them and applying. "Reach out" is so cliched! If blacks, hispanics, and women want those jobs, why don't they "reach out" and go for them?

Thus the call to eliminate the 30 minute rule. With the rule gone, PFD can cast a wider net for recruits.

So if the 30 minute rule is only to get the best, the brightest, and the fittest, why was race and gender introduced into the equation?

Because lagging race and gender representation has long been evident in public safety institutions so yes, a fire chef would also have that on his mind in recruiting as well.

Then he's not looking for the best, the brightest, and the fittest -- he's looking for the black, the hispanic, and the woman. You can't have it both ways. True non-discrimination doesn't inject race or gender in any sense into the equation.

Fire Dept is civil service. The people that score the highest on the civil service exam get the job. Has nothing to do with race or gender, just person with highest score gets the job.

Wrong. It is possible to walk and chew gum, it's just much easier when you expand your pool of eligibles. Ask any corporate, academic, or athletic recruiter.

We're talking location here -- not race or gender. Hispanics, blacks, and women have been eligible for years, so the pool isn't being expanded in that regard. Again, I say, if it's only about the best, the brightest, and the fittest, why inject race and gender into it?
