Homewood Acres a fire department in name only, but...

Jan 1, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The Southtown Star

If there's a fire in the tiny, unincorporated community of Homewood Acres, no one counts on the Homewood Acres Volunteer Fire Department for help.

What are you talking about? This is my real name. Don't hate me or be jealous. You guys give all firefighters from recognized departments a bad name and black eye, whether Vol. contract pt. poc ft. Your a false representation and a danger to the public.

I agree these are people (notice I am not using the term firefighter Because they are not) that can't get on anywhere else. Because a ff that is on another department wouldn't put their life on the line with people that aren't certified to be in a fire to help them. And to do their job correctly. I didn't even know it was a "live" station. I always thought Homewood kept it around as a historical thing.
why are many departments helping them with equipment

Why would 30 people want to join a VFD that averages very few calls a year? I don't get it.
Why you ask? It's about the blue light, the cool t shirts, the Chicks, and we really don't have to go on one single call. So we just pretend.

"Your doing a job that people will do for free". Does that statement make a lot of sense to you? Yeah your right guys are making $100,000 doing a job you do for free. Who sounds like their winning? Sounds to me like the guy making the money doing the same thing that your not getting paid to do.

The problem is not with Volunteers, part time, poc's or full timers, or putting them against full timers. The issue is these guys are not firefighters not vol. pt nothing. They have put their own club together playing dress up. If anything they are volunteering to participate in a club. Stop pretending before you kill someone. Being a trained firefighter is serious business

I read they have 4 state certified instructors, on that department, what fire departments are they on? If its true most of them are on other departments then it is a Volunteer vs paid, will other towns start looking for volunteer members

The guy making $100,000 a year gets replaced by a volunteer, the tax payer is winning

There are people volunteering for this place and working for a full time town. Why would these full time towns continue to pay them? Sounds like their taxpayers are getting ripped off. Pay them what they are willing to work for.

Tom buddy, that post made no sense. If a full-timer wants to volunteer than that's his or her perogative. Common sense would tell you that if one was volunteering they wouldn't be on the clock in another town. Instead of worrying about what HAVFD does, how about you change the cushion on the rocking chair that you sit on everyday.

Common sense would tell you "REAL" firefighters that if MABAS 24 dropped a tone for HAVFD, they would all have to be state-certified firefighters in order to go to another town... I'm starting to wonder about you guys.

Secondly, what's negative about re-establishing a defunct fire station? This was the only fire station in the area besides Sunny Crest for many of years.

So what they don't have an Ambulance. So what they want to establish a fire protection district for only two streets. So what CCHFD is on 183rd.

No one can deny extra HELP!

I think that in a short period of time we may all end being surprised with what they will have accomplished. With proper gear, training and equipment the HAVFD may be a valuable asset in the area. Some other departments don't have a lot of fires or even a lot of calls, but are still relevant and able to assist other departments when needed. I'm referring to departments such as East Hazel Crest, Garden Homes and even Argonne Laboratory Fire Department. The surrounding area fire departments aren't exactly well staffed and as the area continues to decline there will be an even greater need for fire protection with declining budgets to pay for it. If these guys are sincere and want to work hard and learn they may be useful. If I'm wrong and it's just a club made up of make believe firefighters on a dinosaur department then all the naysers will be right. I guess time will tell what the future holds for the HAVFD.
