Oct 20, 2012 Full story: Jamaica Observer 35

The St James Fire Department were up to late yesterday still trying to ascertain the cause of an early morning fire which razed a section of the oldest Jehovah's Witnesses kingdom hall and an adjoining abandoned building on Queen Street here.

I hate to burst your Watchtower induced bubble but $15 million is equivalent to approximately $167,400 U.S. dollars which is a fair appraisal due to the age and location of the edifice.
It is in a middle class section of town which is far different than a middle class section of town in a U.S. city.
Jamaica is still considered a 3rd world country with an average income of less than $80 U.S. per week.
Back in the early 1990's 2 congregations shared that hall, Montego Bay South & Montego Bay North.
Male JW's from the U.K. and the U.S. along with some from the Virgin Islands helped local JW's build it.
For that part of town it was an elaborate building, black & white checkerboard tile floor and white ceiling fans. It had fluorescent lights in the ceiling.
No A/C but it didn't get that hot during the Sunday A.M. Watchtower Study.
The Sunday afternoon Watchtower Study during June, July and August was almost unbearable though.
It didn't have a telephone back then so if you needed to make a telephone call a sister in the South congregation lived next door in a green clapboard house and had a telephone you could use.
Brother Scudamore, one of the elders in the Montego Bay North congregation had a lot to do with that kingdom hall being built and also with the North Coast Assembly Hall about 40 km east of MoBay which was built in 1992. It had a thatched roof supported by huge wooden pillars and wooden bench type seats made out of unfinished logs.
Average Jamaican earns less tha $80.00 a week but has enough money fo a $167,000 kingdom hall sounds like the Catholics with their grand cathedrals and their own members straving. I think Jehovah showed them where their priorities are or should be.

Going to Jamaica is not as self-sacrificing as going to some other places. I wish I could be of help, it would be a good excuse to go there for a few weeks. It would not be a sacrifice for me. And surely there would be time to enjoy the wonderful climate, the beautiful water and beaches, the Caribbean music, and some fabulous jerk chicken and tropical fruit!
Wow. Just wow.

Which beautiful water and beaches are you going to enjoy in Kingston? Your little overprivileged self wouldn't last 2 days in Kingston, much less 2 weeks. Your comments are based on the tourism side of Jamaica, which makes up for less than 5% of the entire island. The vast majority of real Jamaicans live in very hard circumstances.

The level of ignorance of these so called JWs is mind-boggling.

Hey troll,

What the hell do you care?. Are you paying her vacation expenses?.

The bible says to "live quietly and mind your own business".

Did you conveniently forget that scripture?.

Have you? Odd that you call out others for acting in exactly the same way you do. All the while trying to sound so holy by throwing scripture around.

You are confusing the Catholic religion which is owned by the Vatican, which owns all Church property and all Catholics.
You need to look at the paperwork again. If for any reason the cong wants out of the org, that hall does not belong to them.
The money is raised, NY gives them a 'loan' to build, but in the end after the loan is paid back its still wts property.

"After you got home you go on the computer"?.

You are never off the computer. LOL! You probably even take it to the bathroom.

How do you manage to even get in a bath?.

Only a Jehovah's witness could be so ignorant.
I would love to see her down in Kingston for a few weeks.
Maybe she could give us a vacation trip review!!

To be fair, I erred. An article that I read a week or so ago (I think it was the Gleaner, but not sure) had said that the KH was in Kingston. It was on the basis of this article that I commented, without even looking at the article posted at the outset of this thread.

From the looks of the article quoted at the outset of *this* thread, then, it appears that the KH was actually in Montego Bay. Therefore, she might've gotten a bit closer to seeing water and some nice surroundings, but I'm guessing she isn't aware that there's probably no JWs (or even nonJW Jamaicans) with waterfront properties up there...and if you've been to the public beach in Mobay..well...you'd actually be better off going to the one that Kingstonians use. That one is better. But Im guaranteeing, nothing like what she is expecting lmao!!

I was just ignoring your insults. I was in Montego Bay this year. No one has to own beachfront property to enjoy the water and beaches and food.
