Interesting bit of math.

Estimate of blast at ~300Kt indicates a 5m rock.

Probably explains the general lack of big craters & the trailing strewn field of little rock between the termional hole in the lake & the detonation point over Chelyabinsk.

For finding the main meteorite (the bright bit travelling on after the airburst sheared the sides off & turned it into a facsimile of the Soyuz lander... Look about 45 degrees away from the terminal hole in the lake & search for a bright reflector in the lake mud with sonar,(it should be about 3 or 4m under the subsurface mud).

The good news is that the little rocks from the strewn field are now being discovered. Cold snowy weather is very handy for highlighting lots of little black rocks.

Recovery confirms the object as a rock with about 10% iron. The colour appears to confirm it as the glow was an orange yellow indicating silicates and iron. Metallic meteorites tend by comparison to give a green glow as a result of Nickel in the ion trail overwhelming the gold glow of iron.

Incidentally a lot of reports were a mite exaggerated. This was smaller than the comet fragment that was identified on the inward run & detonated over N. Sudan a few years ago.
The Sikhote-Alin meteorite fall in SE. Siberia region of same name was about 10m diameter and caused a strewn crater field. By comparison other than the terminal lake hole, the "skyfall event left no obvious craters, and had the terminal rock landed on soil it may still have been visible jutting out of a a shallow dish splash crater. There may in fact be a few of these as the post explosion images show the terminal rock and several trailing small rocks after the airburst.

happy hunting.

Have a nice day: Ag
