I have to agree with you about the lack of personal responsibility, especially in our American society.
Put the blame on abusive parents, poor teachers, bad laws (or the lack of them), emotional distress, financial woes, the devil, etc, etc, etc... ANYTHING but accept the consequences of doing something wrong and getting caught at it.
I attribute much of this attitude to the religious beliefs of the majority in this country.
The scapegoat religion says it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you are sorry afterward and ask *god* to forgive you. No matter how heinous the act, you CAN be absolved of it. Totally and completely. You don't even have to make amends like AA requires...just believe and be sorry. No wonder it appeals to so many.
Little effort is necessary.
*sigh* I'll stop ranting now... This is one of my pet peeves.

As for L Neil Smith? I dunno, it's been so many years since I read his stuff-- I would suggest his oldest (and likely the best) "The Probability Broach", then if you like that, read them in order published. They are loosely called "The North American Confederacy" series.

Oh, and "broach" in the title is not an item of jewelery, but represents a breach or hole.

Wayne may try to "belittle and berate" but he's not very good at it.
In order to offend someone, you have to actually know *what* will offend them.
That requires empathy. The ability to get out of one's own head and into another's. Something Wayne is unwilling or unable to do.
I've seen some insults hurled on Topix with rapier wit and cunning accuracy (happily, not at me). I really don't like to see people intentionally degraded, even when they appear to deserve it..however it is fascinating to see how human beings treat each other.
