I hope that you know that all of this IS related to evolution in one way or another.

Nope, I was wrong. LED screens use an LED as a back light and then it again passes through two polarizers.

Hmm, plasma?

I just got back from a lecture by Joseph Lykken on the CERN Large Hadron Collider and the Higgs boson. It was a very good lecture and questions ranged from the environmental impact of LHC to the possibility of dark matter being made of discreet particles to the Higgs field.

It is an impressive piece of equipment, an excellent example of large science in action and a great discovery for basic science.

Not exactly news, but since Christmas is coming and some of us may have nerd children this is a really cool sight:

Heck, you don't need nerd children, you can get them for yourself.

I want a set of Reuleaux tetrahedrons!

You would be better off with the shark wheel.

I just got back from a lecture on beetles as ecological engineers in the Brazilian Cerrado. I wasn't familiar with this territory, but it is the South American counterpart to the African savanna with more plants and no herbivorous ungulates. It is an immense piece of land making up about 20 of Brazil's land area. Pretty cool looking territory being eaten up mostly for agricultural use.

I found a Nature Conservancy link that describes the Cerrado and names some species found there.

Interesting. Not sure what the application might be.

Perhaps the adult firm industry will find a use for it.

That's funny. I was showing a friend the video and the first thing he said was "it will probably be sold for cyber sex."
