The Article wrote:
Eels inhabit waters from South America to Greenland. Between September and December mature eels head downstream, traveling with such determination that they will attempt to go up and over anything in their path to reach their spawning area in the Sargasso Sea east of the Bahamas and south of Bermuda.

In 1940-41 when I was in third grade my family lived on Front Street about 80 yards from the Susquehanna River, an eel-migration route. Our house faced Haldeman’s Island. Halfway from the shore to the island our neighbor had a small cabin on pillars. My brother and I found out the reason for this strange structure when our neighbor invited my Dad, my brother and I to spend a night there. It had been built to trap eels.

As soon as it was dark we started for the river. Going through the trees towards the river in silence with the dancing shadows from our light marking our way, I don’t believe I wouldn’t have been more excited on an African safari. The sounds of water lapping at the bow and the oars dipping in the water are etched in my memory.

The cabin had two double bunk beds and a small wood stove. Alongside the cabin was a flat board several feet wide with sides attached extending to the bottom of the river at about a 45-degree angle. Rocks were piled close to the water’s surface, arranged in a V-shape many feet wide at the widest part with the point of the “V” leading into the angled board. Below the edge of the flat board as it extended out of the water was a large wooden box to capture eels.

After a tasty meal on the cabin stove we crawled into bed. Whatever peaceful dreams we had were shattered by slam-bang noises coming from the box. We caught several eels a couple feet in length. Our neighbor had a burlap bag and began putting the eels into it. He told me to pick one up. If he had depended on me to fill his bag he would have been disappointed, but we returned home with a good catch. My mother fried some at breakfast. Sections of the eel were slithering in the pan, which ruined my appetite for an eel breakfast.

This one creature is an example of God’s wisdom and power. With His word He created an animal that could function as a juvenile in a saltwater environment, then mature in a freshwater environment only to return without hesitation to the sea to produce offspring.

The eel in the pan reminds me of the hem-hawing an evolutionist would do to explain how this creature worked all this out over eons. He would have to use doubtful words like “probably” or “maybe.” The theory would require more faith then I can muster for any man’s hypothesis. My faith is in Jesus Christ, who in Luke 24:25-27 without doubtful words put His stamp of approval upon all the Old Testament, which includes the account of creation.

The article was informative and interesting right up until the end.

Then, it dropped 5 notches in intelligence and into the insulting language.

The tone became patronizing. The attitude was condescending.

And, it demonstrated a complete lack of comprehension of how science is works, how science gets done.

The "I just believe-dammit" at the end was pathetic.

And kindof sad.

Yeah, I thought you'd all like that! I liked how he talked about "probably" and "maybe" when speaking about evolution then in the next statement has no problem with the word "faith" being used for his beliefs. The irony kinda slams you like a redwood in the ass.

The Susquehanna is an eel migration route? I never knew that.

Irvin must be related to that other guy that wrote to the editor. What was his name, Homer Snively or something like that?

Homer Snavely.

Lately there's been quite a few letters relating to crap like this and from people on the other side responding. I'll have to post them more often. Apparently I'm not the only one in Lebanon who can use logic.

There's a reason why only a few people always seem to be the ones to submit letters. It's probably because in this area there aren't a lot who can write coherently. And most of the ones that can arose from ignorant fools.

And those hard hitting investigative reports strike again!

Letter to Editor wrote:
Treaty no source for religious foundation
Editor:
Lebanon Daily News

In the Oct. 18 letter “Let schools concentrate on knowledge, not religion,” the writer makes the statement that,“Our nation was not based on Christianity at all, as evidenced by the Treaty of Tripoli drafted by George Washington and signed by John Adams, clearly stating that America was founded as a secular nation.”
I’d like to set the writer, and the record, straight on what that treaty actually said and the facts surrounding it.

The Treaty of Tripoli begins,“As the government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.” This is a true statement since it is referring to the federal government. Our government has abided by the principles of our approved Constitution in not requiring any of us to adhere to any one particular religion. In fact, the First Amendment states that,“Congress shall make no laws respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..” To say that our nation was not founded on Christianity using as a basis the Treaty of Tripoli is wrong.
The rationale for Article XI at that time was to differentiate America from European Christianity, which for the most part was state-run religion. This treaty assured the Muslims (the Barbary states) that America would not be fueling any religious wars with them. Keep in mind that this treaty was a result of Barbary piracy that included imprisonment of American seamen and stealing American vessels and cargo.

As for this treaty being drafted by George Washington, I think our writer would be hard-pressed to back that statement up with any original or credible documentation. No statement in the treaty can be attributed to Washington. In fact, the treaty did not arrive in America until months after he left office; he never saw the treaty that was negotiated and drafted by diplomat Joel Barlow.

President John Adams, who signed the treaty made his Christianity known through numerous statements like this one to Thomas Jefferson on June 28, 1813:“The general principles upon which the fathers achieved independence were ... the general principles of Christianity.”(John Adams, Works, Vol X, pp 45-46).

If the writer wants to quote treaties as a source for America’s lack of Christian roots, what about the Paris Peace Treaty of 1783, which begins with the phrase,“In the name of the most holy and undivided Trinity”?
Our town is full of win. Maybe I'll make this the official thread for "Lebanon Loonies".

A case of classic historical rewriting, again.

*sigh*

Some folk's faith is SO weak, that it's not enough to try to force everyone around them to be _exactly_ like they, no...

They must rewrite history, too-- to try and cast IT in the mould of their petty, narrow beliefs.

Sad.

Wow. Just wow.
I didn't know that those viewpoints ruled in an area so close to where science dominates the public eye. I live just outside of Philadelphia, and the kids all think views like this are ridiculous.

There's a lot of conservative pockets throughout Pennsylvania. If you look at the voting record for the Lebanon County area you'll see a lot of Republican votes.

IIDayo, I could not remember where you posted that letter to the editor from that Homer Snavely guy, but when I read the following, the name rang a bell. I am glad I found the eels post to recheck his name.

Did you hear that he conducted a seminar at the Farm Show Complex? There was an article in the "York Daily Record".

See here:
