Should evolution be taught in high school?

There are 180369 comments on the www.scientificblogging.com story from Feb 24, 2008, titled Should evolution be taught in high school?. In it, www.scientificblogging.com reports that:

Microbiologist Carl Woese is well known as an iconoclast. At 79 years of age, Woese is still shaking things up. Most recently, he stated in an interview with Wired that...

"My feeling is that evolution shouldn't be taught at the lower grades. You don't teach quantum mechanics in the grade schools. One has to be quite educated to work with these concepts; what they pass on as evolution in high schools is nothing but repetitious tripe that teachers don't understand."

"Using this information, Alexander ordered the construction of a mole (causeway) that would stretch across the water to Tyre. Tearing down the remains of the old mainland city of Tyre, Alexander's men began building a mole that was approximately 200 ft. wide. The early phases of construction went smoothly as the city's defenders were unable to strike at the Macedonians. As it began to extend farther into the water, the builders came under frequent attack from Tyrian ships and the city's defenders who fired from atop its walls."

Obviously, this took place on the mainland as he had no navy and the Bible clearly describes a land battle.

"In ancient times, the island city of Tyre was heavily fortified (with defensive walls 150 feet (46 m) high[10]) and the mainland settlement, originally called Ushu (later called Palaetyrus, meaning "Old Tyre," by the Greeks) was actually more like a line of suburbs than any one city and was used primarily as a source of water and timber for the main island city.[11] Josephus records that the two fought against each other on occasion,[12] although most of the time they supported one another because they both benefited from the island city's wealth from maritime trade and the mainland area's source of timber, water and burial grounds."
It was Ushu way before (1300s BC) before being renamed Old Tyre.

You moron, the Greek historians called it "Old Tyre". The land based cities were never called "Old Tyre" by the inhabitants.

My Gawd, you could cut Urb's Stupid with a knife, I don't think I have seen it that thick since debating with How's That for Stupid.

Urb, the Bible says you are wrong many times. What specifically do you want to know about.

And you have to be civilized first. Lying is not civil. Pretending you have not lost when every claim you make is debunked is not being civil.

The rudeness always starts with the creatards and then they complain about our rudeness.

Hypocrites.

And as I said the stupid is so thick you could cut it with a knife.

I missed how this post of Urb's supports all of my claims.

It states the walls were around Tyre. None around the suburbs. It states the natives called it Ushu, it was the Greeks who called it Old Tyre. It was never called by the natives "Old Tyre".

Hmm, how to dumb it down to Urb's level?

Aha! Hey Urb, have you ever seen any of the "American Pie" movies? There is one character that you barely ever hear the right name for. That was "Stifler's Mom". One character had the hots for "Stiffler's Mon" and that was how everyone always talked about her. Even when the two finally got together she wanted to be called "Stifler's Mom". I guess the character was supposed to get a cougarish pleasure out of that. In real life you might refer to someone as the equivalent of "Stifler's Mom" but in reality that is not the name that she goes by.

You are conflating "Old Tyre" with Ushu in the same way that Finch (I looked it up on IDMB) conflated his hottie:

From American Pie 2 (2001)
[last lines]
Finch: Oh, Jeanine, Jeanine!
Stifler's Mom: Call me Stifler's Mom.
Finch:[orgasmic noise] STIFLER'S MO-O-O - OM!

No, atheists have no reason to lie. As the saying goes, the truth shall set you free. The only ones constantly caught lying here are the creatards.

I don't do those things because God gave laid down absolute morality and I am a man made in the image of God and was given a conscience and so I want to obey God's laws.

If I were an atheist, and believed in strict materialism, there would be nothing from which to reference to and I could rationalize it away. For example, abortion, euthanasia, child pornography, etc. Men make laws but from what? If I were atheist, and there were no God and no natural laws forbidding it, why should I agree with them? I want to do what I want to do. Right? Or if I could get away with murder and nobody will find out, why not? After all we are all just a result of evolution, mere animals, that have just randomly evolved from the basic elements. How can we even trust our own thoughts? Afterall, we were not designed. We are just the result of chemical reactions. Right? We can change whatever flimsey rules some joker put up. Nobody to answer to really.

A couple of key concepts that you fail to acknowledge with regard to secular morality:

Social Responsibility
Empathy for your fellow Human Beings
Decency

Besides, a Christian can go out and rape, murder, engage in child porn, and all sorts of other atrocities.....just as long as he asks Jesus for forgiveness before he dies, right?

That's the kind of ratioale you're employing.

Hypocrite.

There's no such thing as absolute morality, there is a such a thing as a moral consensus. This is the thing that taught us humans despite race religion or whatever what have yous.
There are lines of behavior we can all agree on.

Well maybe it's not you to agree with the human race.:)

Apart from the obvious strawman about 'randomly evolved', lets concentrate on a few points.

'Morality' comes from many influences, upbringing , society , peer pressure , law etc.

.
On the last point, you really want to go there ? The Catholic Church has constantly attempted to cover up instances of child abuse - seems your 'absolute morality isn't all that absolute after all
Urban Cowboy wrote:

Because most people (not all) find this wrong - seems to work

But on the subject of murder - obviously have to point out Muslim fundementalists

and for balance

So your religion promotes morality argument seems quite weak, but since this is a science forum , if you want to provide any particular statistics to support your stance rather than retoric ?

The Christian idea of "morality" slays me some times like on topics such as;

"Death with Dignity" .... the "Ethic of Reciprocity" would lead me to keep a terminally ill person as comfortable as possible by whatever means possible (using drugs that might cause termination) until they asked to die. Then I would feel obliged to help them pass as peacefully and painlessly as possible.

But a Christian .... "Killing is WRONG" so even if the person is screaming in pain begging for relief, no "dangerous medications" should be given!.... "LOVELY"!!! NOT!!

"Abortion" .... the "Ethic of Reciprocity" would lead me to encourage abstinence or at least birth control to avoid having to make such a decision. But if a woman pleads to terminate an unwanted pregnancy, such assistance should be provided, it is her body.

But a Christian .... "Killing is WRONG" so even if the pregnancy would kill both mother and child, abortion should be avoided, in fact most birth control is discouraged. If either or both mother and child survive, then no matter the condition of either, they are kicked to the curb and told to "get a job"..... "LOVELY"!!! NOT!!
