Avoiding Common Sense Errors in Reasoning:

Fallacies of Presumption:

1) Appeal to Ignorance: because something is not known to be true, it must be false.

2) Begging the Question:
The truth of the conclusion is already assumed upon premises.

3)Complex question:
Two unrelated points are conjoined as a single proposition.

4)False Dilemma:
Two choices are given when in fact there are three (or more) options.

5)Hegelian Fallacy:
It is assumed that the middle position must be correct simply because it is the middle position.

6)Pseudo-Tolerance:
The assumption that "I must respect all opinions" (or some variation) ends the need for further consideration of an issue.

7)Relativist Fallacy:
A person rejects a claim by asserting that the claim might be true for others but is not true for him/her.

8)Who is to say?:
Affecting a skeptical attitude with the rhetorical "who is to say?" question is supposed to prove that there is no way to decide whether any position or view is better than another. Assumes that the truth is unknowable.

1)Appealing to Ignorance:
Arguments of this form assume that since something has not been proven false, it is therefore true. Conversely, such an argument may assume that since something has not been proven true, it is therefore false.

Example:
Bill: "I think that some people have psychic powers"
Jill: "What is your proof?"
Bill: " No one has been able to prove that people do not have psychic powers."

Example:

"You cannot prove that God does not exist, so therefore He must exist."
"You cannot prove that God exists, therefore He doesn't"

Lack of proof is not proof.

Solution:
Proof: Identify the proposition in question. Argue that is may be true even though we don't know whether it is or isn't.

I think I saw you post on your service, I wont press coz you stated you dont like to speak on it but, have you followed any of the news on the Tillman story and the supposed cover up on his death from friendly fire? He was quite a man to turn down 3.6 million dollars and an NFL football career to go fight for his country.

News about the Internet and responsibility....

Englishman hangs self while using Internet chat room
Canadian Press
Published: Friday, March 23, 2007 LONDON (AP)- A man who apparently committed suicide while using an Internet chat room with other people died of hanging, police said Friday.

The body of Kevin Whitrick, a father of two children, was found Wednesday night after a chat room user contacted police to report the 42-year-old had "self-harmed" while online via Webcam.

http://www.canada.com/topics/technology/news/...

Telling people to do this or that while online, if it leads to their death, they are culpable. I've been guilty of stooping to saying low things, as its once been said insults are the last refuge of anexhausted mind.

How these sick bast*rds can sit and watch , and egg on a man to hang himslef on webcam is beyond me....people ask...Is there Evil in the world?.....YES!!!!!! I hope the Brits hunt down and prosecute every last poster, its illegal to asist a suicide.....

Manipulative Persuasions...
Bruce A. Epstein in "How to combat negative peer pressure," in the September 2002 issue of Current Health 2, A Weekly Reader Publication, is quoted as saying, The "desire to be accepted by their peers is perhaps the strongest motivating force during adolescence." Many studies reinforce his theory. One study showed, for example, that a student who knew the correct answer to a question gave the wrong answer just because everyone else in the class gave the wrong answer.

Parents may need to seek professional psychological help for children suffering from peer rejection, especially when the child is depressed or shows overly aggressive behavior. Help may also be needed for adolescents whose acceptance by peers relates to common negative behaviors, such as criminal activities, gang affiliation, bullying, smoking, and drug and alcohol abuse. Professional psychological help may also be needed if the child is depressed. If the child talks about or threatens suicide, professional help should be sought immediately."

Ana, AKA Amber...I hope I haven't encuraged you to be different for difference sake alone....I advocate to be true to oneself, being open and honest about beliefs and flaws is very good for me. I don't particulalry care for the psychologoical communites opinion....I've seen in real life more than a few psyche's with scarred wrists, which of course...made me think WTF? but everyone struggles with self, no matter whether they openly admit or even consciously know it, they do...Theres a long checklist we go down, quite quickly, it becomes automatic...theres so many dynamics involved...

I'm stating this as fact with no real formal education in the subject, only a reasonable amouint of common sense and experience. When I was a younger man I thought I knew everything, couldn't tell me poop...."I sincerely thoguht I was so complete, look how wrong you can be" are some of my fav lyrics, it tells thw whole story....Some people, are still stuck on "smart" while others are stuck on "stupid" , neither one is capable of embracing others ideas very much....

The anonymity of the internet is as dangerous as it can get with dynamics...thats part of why I show my "warts" so people can know exactly "where" I am coming from, for better or worse...you get the real me...And really, when it ocms right down to it...thats IS the first Demand anyone should request from from another in any type of relationship, friendly or otherwise except business and WAR. JMO worthless, wont even get one a cup of coffe...just my view

Strong ethics are the backbone of many expert persuaders. They 'encourage' people to warm to their ideas so people believe they have made their own choice.

At this level, it's no worse or better than ordinary advertising that convinces us we have 'needs' when in fact we may not.

Milton Erickson is a good place to study.
The whole NLP field was built on the back of him more or less.
