Celebrated preacher blames Colorado massacre on the teaching of evolution in schools

There are 32 comments on the Steuben Courier story from Jul 23, 2012, titled Celebrated preacher blames Colorado massacre on the teaching of evolution in schools. In it, Steuben Courier reports that:

Rick Warren's tweet of last Friday is reminiscent of then-Rep. Tom DeLay's argument of 13 years ago that tragedies like the shootings at Columbine High School happen "because our school systems teach the children that they are nothing but glorified apes who are evolutionized [ sic ] out of some primordial soup."

I'm not discussing why anyone should fear God. I'm pointing out that intelligent, rational individuals exist that have a fear of God and that this fear is a restraint against being a mass murderer, or a stooge politician or a wall-street bankster.

Unless God told them to do it.

So you're telling me the ONLY thing preventing you from going on a rampant killing spree is because you fear punishment from God?

What a disturbed individual you are.

No. I'm saying that people with an enlightened conscience have a greater sense of God and the fear of God while individuals with seared consciences make more successful mass murderers.

Can't say I've heard of the guy, but it's funny that Warren is apparently considered "moderate by most". Arguing for religion in public schools in place of evolution? Right. So just another fundie reality-denying creo then.
He was supposedly more of a moderate. I had heard of him because a few years ago, he wrote a best seller called "The Purpose Driven Life" that was on the NYT best seller list for months and months.

Well said Katy.
This event is terribly sad and I would prefer to refrain from passing judgement until all the facts are in. Nevertheless, to me it seems likely that there are two questions that need to be addressed:
How does the mental health system deal with disturbed people and is mental health care readily available to those in need?
How can the gun culture in the USA be wound back?
NBeither of these are going to be easy tasks, but they are essential, methinks.
As for Rick Warren's comment they are simply beyond the pale of civilised debate. I am a strong believer in free speech, but this sort of hate speech needs to be opposed in the strongets possible way. Every time some idiot makes these sort of offensive comments they need to be exposed as the ignorant bigotted fools that they are.
Our mental health care system is sorely lacking and many (not all) insurance companies offer limited if any reimbursement for therapy.

I wish I knew how the gun culture in the US could be wound back. The omnipotent NRA has immense and far reaching political clout. The background checks are a joke, no one would even know if you had a history of mental illness...oh, and then there is the internet. This guy bought 6000 rounds over the internet!!

Interesting. So The Crusades never happened? The Spanish Inquisition? All "God fearing" individuals who committed mass murder in the name of Jesus.

Where is the evidence of any of those people had an enlightened conscience or a fear of God?

Where is the evidence that such a thing exists to fear in the first place?
