Polygamy is a marriage which includes more than two partners and includes:

polygyny - marriage between a man and more than one wife at a time and there is no marriage bond between the wives

polyandry - marriage between a woman and more than one husband at a time and there is no marriage bond between the husbands

group marriage - marriage which includes multiple husbands and wives

I'm interested in knowing your opinions about polygamy. If all the individuals involved in a polygamous marriage are consenting adults, should it be legal?

Yes. Consenting adults should be able to do pretty much what they want to do.

I don't have any issues with people doing it, but don't know if it would be for me. We might have to change some colloquial expressions. Triple dating? Quadruples counselling.

Would polygamy constitute any disavantage to society or the individuals in a polygamous relation?

It might put a bit of pressure on the missionary position.

It might be an advantage to the individuals in the relationship. More incomes. More people to share the work. I don't see any serious direct disadvantage to society if it were allowed. It might make divorce more complicated, but that is a complicated process anyway.

Insurance companies would probably complain.

If there are no real disadvantages to poligamy, why is it ilegal in most countries? Why did it became ilegal in first place? Why is it that nobody is trying to make it legal?

I have no moral or ethical issues with polygamy.

However, from a legal standpoint, this is an enormous quagmire.

Example:
A group marriage between two husband and three wives. Both men and one of the women have jobs outside of the home. Both men have children with each of the three women.

One of the non-career wives wants a divorce.

Does she get custody of her kids? Does the non-genetically related father get visitation? Do the non-genetically related parents have to pay child support? Does anyone have to pay alimony? Does that person have visitation rights of the other kids to whom they are not biologically related? Do they have to pay child support for those kids?

What if the same family adopted a kid who is not genetically related to anyone? What happens to that kid during a divorce?

What if after that, one of the men and the working wife also want a divorce from the other two but not from each other?

How do we determine property rights on top of the visitation and alimony, etc.

Divorce law is already extremely burdensome on the courts, so much so that some states have made "no fault divorce" the norm to cut down on endless, generally useless, court battles.

If we are going to allow lots of different versions of multiple marriage, we need a much better system by which to dissolve the ones that don't work (as will inevitably happen in some cases).
