i love the way johnson says that "we'll cover the schools" on october 17. there aren't enough subs in the district on any given friday and he thinks they will cover for all the union members who want to attend the convention. what he means is that the teachers who show up to work on october 17 will cover for the teachers who choose to attend the convention. it would be nice if they emptied out all the dead wood at fulton holland on that day and put these people back in the classrooms. there would definitely be enough people to cover classes if that were to occur.

How is it that other states are able to start the school year AFTER Labor Day and still manage to have exams BEFORE the holiday break?

People will never figure out that the only way to go is private school.

Perhaps they'll ask for parent volunteers to lead review lessons in each of the classes. Subs can fill in for classes where there aren't enough parent volunteers. They could also ask for college students to help for the day. Science majors, Math majors, English majors...they might like to volunteer for a day also.

Mmmmm, so the first semester of school is now 83 instead of 90 days and if a student falls below 81 days of attendance must demonstrate mastery of material with a passing exam under current policy but does not address the issue under the new school calendar. So, Mr Johnson will figure a way to deal with this issue. Let's hope that there is not a hurricane during the first semester forcing to close schools. Nice move.
Maybe I'm old fashion and such, but let's bring back the old days of school. Start the first Monday after labor day and end the last week of June. Close the schools for official holidays, winter and spring break and do away with all other closures and don't use schools as voting places.

I think there should be year long school, less likely for kids to get in trouble since a lot of parents have to work multi-jobs, and it would improve kids learning ability. It seems like every time you turn around the kids are off from school, how do you expect them to learn anything, and the teachers are so pressured to cram everything in such little time frame,it's bad enough the classes are 25-30 kids.

In a perfect world the father and mother are supposed to pay for it. in the real world I have to pay for your kids education. For what cost per student, I prefer to give you around 18 K a year to educate your brats. Is cheaper, but he will be a moron anyway, like you.

Keep the kids year yound and then we wouldnt have so many idiots in the world and trouble. Are you willing to pay teachers to work year round? If so, I bet teachers would be happy to do that. Also, teachers need more time to raise your kids, since you can't do it yourself.

I am a past member on the Calendar Committee. One BIG issue was always starting school in the middle of the week(Weds.). This is crazy now. It is NO BIG DEAL for high school students to take their exams and end the semester after the winter break. Don't rush the courses being taught. Teachers will have less time to teach more information AND the students will need to know it all for the exams. The days should have been better balanced. Unfortunately the desicion makers seem to be more concerned with the tests and not the learning time. Wake up please and do what is best for the kids. Maybe one day they will figure this out.

Whoo. Good thing I live in Broward. This year, as stated in the article, we had exams after break, and I didn't hear any [students] complaining. Last year, we did have exams before break, and while it makes much more sense that way, it is ridiculous that Palm Beach schools will have one semester that is 83 days while the other is 97. That is a big gap when it comes to school.

Here we go again... Art Johnson is attempting to decide what is best for our children. Mr. Johnson does not care about our children. His main objective is to make himself look good in the media. Here is a school schedule idea... cancel either april or feb break and start school after labor day. If you cancelled either one of those or both, you can push the start of the school year back till after labor day. August is to hot in south florida to make our children be in school plus most familys have something planed over labor day weekend,

I have no children. But I can say with full confidence that the Florida school boards are absolutely incompetent. I also hate it when people tell us how much better things are in NY. But---the school calendar HAS NEVER BEEN A PROBLEM. School always started the first Monday after Labor Day, and ended the last day of June. It really doesn't take rocket science to figure this out. And as far as the FCAT----NY has always had State Wide Regents exams. How do you start school in mid August? Something’s terribly wrong with Florida.

I'm sick and tired of vacation plans ruling the school calendar. Education is what is supposed to be important, not tourism industries and family vacation plans.
I bet the data will show that kids didn't do any worse taking their exams after winter break. It was that way when I was growing up and nobody ever suffered.
There is no longer a need for summer break. They originally occurred because of summer heat and families needing kids to work on the family farm.
Most teachers complain there isn't enough time in the school year to teach everything that is required and most parents work or those that don't have really bored kids or spend a ton of money trying to entertain them all summer.
A lot of teachers have to work during the summer to make up for the income they don't earn during the summer.
Fund year round school and ENOUGH of this nonsense.

I like the concept that students who have more than a few days absent have to demonstrate mastery... It sounds like kids who show up for class on a regular basis do not actually have to learn anything, just as long as they are present. I know places where people get paid just for showing up, do not need to do any real work... Oops, I'm sorry, employees of the Fulton-Holland Educational Service Center (aka the offices of the School District of Palm Beach County, aka the Taj Mahal), I did not mean to attract the attention on you!
