Heard about the recent earthquakes in Yellowstone? How about that video of bison fleeing the park? Does it mean the supervolcano is about to blow? No, and here's why.

This article came in very handy in giving the date of the last breakthrough pluton responsible for all the domes & flows (about 1000Km3 total) in the W. part of the modern Yellowstone caldera.

The breakthrough resulted in the "west thumb" caldera 173000Bp with all the domes & flows 150000, 100000, and 70000Bp postdating the breaktrough and largely (domes) coincident with major ice accumulations in the yellowstone area during glacial intervals. The west thumb caldera itself also appears to be a glacial time event & likely erupted through either an ice cap or a subglacial lake.

Of note is also the 70,000Bp dome/ flow events which occurred AFTER the 74000Bp Toba supervolcano (N.Sumatra), with the response to this eruption effectively doubling the size of the Laurentide ice cap. The magma was forced out of the SW side of the Yellowstone caldera as a result of ice load on the NE side.

In interglacial time (now) the lid over the caldera is hot & plastic (few earthquakes) and is only cool enough to fracture under Yellowsone lake. The bulk of the quakes occur in the solid rock outside the caldera rim, which is a response to slow spreading & uplift from an ascending pluton @ mid crustal levels (~30Km or so) in the Mt Washburn area, largely responsible for absence of basalt eruptions N, & E of the caldera & also hot springs in crustal fault zones outside of the caldera such as at Mammoth.
