Looks like a dose of the "zit" effect.
ie. tectonic shortening of the Aegean backarc basin forces up magma from the deep parts of the high level magma chamber due to a reduction in volume caused by the walls closing in.
The result is a rise of the degassed magma at the top of the chamber which then cools and sinks.
Fun bit will occur when a gas rich magma filled fracture in the deep crust of the backarc basin squeezes horizontally into the base of the chamber (the volcano sits in the least compressed bit).
Gas exchange @ that point results in explosive volcanism followed by dome extrusion.
Also note that magma may miss the chamber as happened during the eruption of the Kolumbos bank Maar eruption off the NE. coast of Santorini. Backarc basin tectonics & volcanism are not exact sciences & magma rich fracture propagation does not run on rails.
NOTE: the magma rich fracture that led to the major santorini caldera forming eruption was a rebound/long duration mercalli X event (r/lx) that relaxed the crust of the Dinaride range (Former Yugoslavia) and the Aegean backarc basin with a WSW. or SW. vector approximately 2500BC.
Several cases of r/lx with different vector have occurred in the interval time since that date. Last events to affect santorini being 365AD (SW. vector), and 1303 (SE. vector) Noticeable as they are accompanied by a big tsunami caused by relaxation of the crust 2004 style.
The magma rich fracture set formed by these events are now squeezing in, and a look at the eruptive history indicates that several have already arrived.
For a caldera forming event such as the Minoan event the fracture must be very long and remain in the base of the crust for a considerable time before being squeezed into a volcano with a large high level magma chamber full of slowly cooling and differentiating generally silica rich rock.
Nice spot to watch, but likely to be dome building events in the near future.
