4-Methylmethcathinone (Mephedrone, 4-MMC, mmcat, often mistakenly referred to as ) is a stimulant drug related to cathinone and methcathinone. The effects of 4-methylmethcathinone are reportedly comparable to those of similar drugs such as MDMA and methylone.
The drug was used in early products by the legal high company Neorganics[2], but the range was discontinued in January 2008 after the government of Israel, where the company is based, made 4-Methylmethcathinone illegal. It has been reported to be sold as a designer drug,[3] but little is known about its pharmacology or toxicology as yet. 4-Methylmethcathinone has recently been reported as having been sold as "ecstasy" in the Australian city of Cairns, along with ethylcathinone.

Why Mephedrone is Legal

The Reasoning Behind it?
All of the compounds in PIHKAL that fell outside the phenethylamine derivatives para. were specifically scheduled in 2003, to prevent anyone from trying to trip legally; the items were blanket scheduled, as even ones labelled inactive by shulgin were included. Now, one of the ones specifically named as being buy methadrone outside the derivs para was BODH, which is 4-methyl-2,5-dimethoxy-beta-hy droxyphenethylamine.

So by that reasoning, any variation from phenethylamine (amphetamine or alpha-ethylphenethylamine), such as a beta-hydroxyphenethylamine, isn't specifically covered by that paragraph. So if a beta-hydroxyphenethylamine is outside the act, then a beta-keto group (which is what methylone has) is also outside the act. This also means that any ring substituted cathinone or methcathinone derivative is outside the act, should anyone come across them, as they are not specifically named.
