Did they have a warrant for the search? Did a dog hit on the vehicle?

Sounds like the evidence may get thrown out at a suppression hearing unless there is more to the story that this news account is not telling us.

What's a warrant? Is that in that Bill of Rights thing? I thought only commies and tea party freaks worried about stuff like that.

They don't need a warrant. It is school property. Cars and locker searches are allowable. Next case.

Mike - you are an idiot - according to your location, you don't live in Powell, so stay out!

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and possessions, against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated; and no warrant shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, particularly describing the place to be searched and the person and things to be seized.

Unless you are on school property. Unless you are on a public road. Unless, unless, unless.

Yes, this is terrible but hopefully it will make some people think Powell is ghetto. That way the thousands that have moved there in the past 10 years will go back to wherever they came from and we won't have to deal with terrible traffic and levy after levy to build more and more schools.
Wait what

I believe the searches also have to be "routine." An expectation has to be established that the searches are a common and frequent enough event that a reasonable person would not assume that their items are private due to only the threat of searches.

Having said all that, this should hardly be a surprise. Drugs are consumed by students in the suburbs who can afford them.

But it's for own safety!!! Against the evil terrorist drug dealers who want to turn our precious children into Muslim junkies!!! Or something!!!

Besides if you haven't got anything to hide, why don't you want the government searching your house and car in the first place?!?!?!

sounds like an illegal search to me. If you are too dumb to lie to the cops about the illegal stuff you have, you probably shouldn't have illegal stuff.

I am glad this made the paper. Fellow parents in Dublin and Olentangy schools have told me about drug problems in the schools, including deaths from overdoses, and how the stories are suppressed from the media to keep the towns images sparkling and property values high. Only in the light of day will the kids get the help and education that they need.

So if the name is public record, then get it from the sheriff and print it. The Olentangy district has never been very open, but don't put a line like that in the story, then be too lazy to follow up with the cops to get the name.

I know, kind of pathetic. Won't be long before students are strip searched - or worse.

But it's for "safety", so it's all ok.

Why does the Dispatch need to publish a minor's name?

If it is a public record then why not do some actual reporting and work around the roadblock instead of merely crying about it?

This name issue sounds like the kind of lazy reporting Editor Ben Marrison has just complained about in his blog post.
