Drug Destruction Compliance Lagging for Local Police Departments

In fact, police in every county in the NBC29 viewing area have been breaking a law related to records of drug destruction for years. Full Story

who do you call when the police break the law?
i'm sure all the drugs that have ever been confiscated by police have been "destroyed".
these "humans" would never "drop the ball".

Apparently Sellers wasn't doing this in Fairfax either. I would have thought we were buying his years of experience.

I wonder if they ran the list again how many departments would technically be in compliance before they ran the story. I read the code section, doesn't give a time frame. To me it speaks volumes about the law in the fact that all of these big accredited departments are not in compliance with it. Culpeper PD is nationally accredited and they weren't on the list.

does the required "paper work" include affidavits that the disposal was witnessed and by whom? In other words did it really happen?

So, ignorance of the law is no excuse....UNLESS YOU'RE A COP????? Let's see how they wiggle out of this one. Or if they simply ignore it altogether.

Is this really worthy of news? An unenforceable law just to report the destruction of confiscated drugs that the LE Agencies were not made aware of (what the Commonwealth's Attorney and the Attorney General's Office is supposed to do) that has no repercussion and has been acknowledged by the agencies is really this big a deal?

Shame on NBC29 for further increasing the rift between the LE Agencies and the people they serve with this poorly and agenda-filled article. Your use of inflammatory terms just to make this mole hill the size of Kilimanjaro is pretty low even for you.

Talk about desperation!!

Cops create the rift well enough without any help from 29. Crack city is safe for dealers here. They were out writing tickets in a 25mph zone yesterday while the drug trade goes unmolested. Law enforcement? right.

From what I've seen over the many, many years I 've been in and around Charlottesville, the news rarely concerns themselves with the facts. Facts often times aren't sexy and don't sell- You gotta spice it up to keep up with the other tabloids...err I mean journalism.

I would dare to guess that there is something wrong with this procedure to have so many out of compliance. The procedure is the common denominator?

You'd think that when the police seize drugs and then put/sell them back on the street that they would at least be smart enough to do the destruction paperwork..
Wish I could use the ignorance card and then just comply..

Accountability?

The local LE agencies should know the destruction laws as well as they know the possession laws.

Regardless of what I think, law is law. I don't get an exemption for not knowing that the action I am doing is illegal..Why should anyone else?
