Grosse Pte. slaying: Murder for hire?

Joseph Michael Marasco had been in bad shape for a long time. A heroin addict stricken with the virus that causes AIDS, and three felony convictions to his name, Marasco, 51, was living with his elderly mother ... Full Story

Hmmmm. I hate to say it but a down and out drug addict with AIDS, a criminal record and what appears to be an Italian American surname who is accused of killing a bookkeeper in a brazen daytime shooting sure sounds like a mob hit to me. Too many ducks in too straight a row for all the details to be mere coincidence. I thought such scenarios only happened on tv shows like "Law and Order". Well, just goes to show that there's crime everywhere---in Grosse Pointe maybe it involves a lot more money and is generally better hidden but it is definitely there. One of the major differences compared to poorer urban areas is that because of the higher overall education level and economic wherewithal of Grosse Pointe residents the negative effects of crime are not as apparent.

The funny thing is, when it happened, all those who were familiar with the situation all knew that he was responsible. No surprise to those who have been following the case.

Is this the same joe Marasco that went to GUPUS in the 70's, and was my first boyfriend? I am in shock-he was a priviledged and well to do guy. What happened to him? I thought he was going places.

Did he go to GUPUS? Did he ever get married and have children? Over the years I often wondered what happened to him-never expecting to hear this news. I am very saddened.

I too went to ULS and graduated with Joe Marasco and have often wondered what happened to him. In 1972, he was a great-looking guy with a friendly personality, the world at his feet. At the last reunion, someone mentioned he was into drugs and now this. How sad for him and his family.

That's the same Joe. His name is spelled correctly. Sister Madeline, dad Dominic. He never married or had kids, as far as I know. He got caught up in the drug world and obviously never got untangled.

yes, it's the same Joe. I talked to him after the murder not knowing it happened in his driveway. I actually mentioned that there had been a murder on his street. He changed the subject and we talked about his late father. I liked Joe. What a sad way to end up.

That's very weird. I attended St. Basil from 1960 to maybe 1965 (we moved to Grosse Pointe Shores in 1967) but I'm certain Joe Marasco wasn't among my classmates. In fact, one of my best friends (to this day) from GPN was Joe Marasco's best friend in elementary school--which, as others have noted, was GPUS. He couldn't have been in two schools simultaneously!
I met Joe once at the GPUS skating rink when I was in the 9th grade. I knew his sister (Madeline) because she eas a close friend of the younger sister of one of my close friends (I seem to recall that they both attended what morphed into University-Liggett). She was a lovely girl--this must be killing her.
Do you happen to remember a boy at St. Basil named Patrick Oliver?

In what year were you born? I was born in '54 and was in Sister Daniel Michael's first-grade class from 1960 - 1961, Mrs. Ripepi's second-grade class from 1961 - 1962,.... Trust me, this is NOT the same Joe Marasco you remember. This Joe Marasco attended GPUS (now ULS) from kindergarten. He and my friend Tom attended school together until high school (Joe stayed at GPUS). Maybe your Joe was "MOrOsco?"

I'm STILL trying to figure out what an "Italian American" name is. I know what "Italian names" are and there certainly were (are?) connected Italians in Grosse Pointe (my parents, in fact, bought our house from one), but this family certainly wasn't. The (late) father was a legitimate businessman and, according to my friend, "a real gentleman."

I just learned of this tragedy. I'm stunned. It's unbelievable.
I attended University Liggett and graduated in 1972 with Joe "Mick" Marasco. We were very good friends. We went to concerts, ski trips out west, Florida for spring break and partied on my family's boat. Joe often invited me to spend weekends at his house so I wouldn't have to drive home late at night (I lived in Detroit and commuted to Grosse Pointe on a motorcycle). His family's hospitality was always warm and welcoming, especially his mother. His father took me on a tour of the family business. I ate dinner at Joe's house often. Whenever, I was at his house, his mother and I always had long interesting conversations.
Joe started calling himself "Mick" after attending the Rolling Stones concert in 1972 in admiration of Mick Jagger. In fact, sadly, this was when he started immulating the "Rock and Roll" lifestyle (including drug use) of his idols. In one of the photos that was taken of the Stones concert at Cobo Hall and published in the Detroit Free Press review, Joe is wearing a black top hat and leaning on the stage, dead center.
I thought he was joking when he said he was going to get some "works" (needles) so he could be just like one of his heroes, Keith Richards. My father was a medical doctor and had warned me of the dangers of drugs. He went so far as to introduce me to several of his patients who were drug addicts so I could see the ravages of drug use. I warned Joe that it was crazy to even consider using drugs but he laughed and said he wasn't serious. Little did I know that he was deadly serious.
After high school we went our separate ways. I went to college out west and lost touch with him. I ran in to one of our mutual friends (who was probably Joe's best friends) at a concert in the late 90s. He told me he hadn't seen Joe in years. At our 25th high school reunion I asked about Joe and was told that he was coming but he never showed.
My deepest, sincerest condolences to his family, especially his mother. Joe was a good friend who I shared some great times and experiences with. Unfortunately, he was not strong enough to resist some of life's darker challenges and has died tragically.

Did you also attend GPUS while in elementary and junior high school? Did you know Tom Heholt?
