Another thing is, why hasn't the doctor who actually diagnosed Adam come forward yet? Is he afraid he misdiagnosed him? Doesn't want a lawsuit?
As for the mother who wrote the article, at least she was actively seeking help for her son. We have read that Nancy battled the school, against getting help for Adam. Nancy was recommended of a local Autism support group, yet never went. What does the Author Mom make of Nancy who didn't want to involve the professionals needed to help her son?
You are born with Autism, it is present since birth. Signs are there since a young age and it will be obvious. Adam should have gotten support when he was very young. Had he have gotten therapy, he likely never would have shot up that school.
What is sad is that Nancy thought she could go this road herself, and be able to help Adam all by herself without anyone else. No one should have to take care of a disabled child especially severe one by their lonesome. There are numerous therapists, professionals, support groups out there for help. If you don't want to go in person, many online groups also exist. Most all parents of children with Autism or a mental disability are members of support groups such as NAMI. Even the caregiver can get worn out, need a shoulder to vent or cry on, have need for advice, or just friendly understanding. As to why Nancy turned down such groups, we can only speculate.
It sounds like Nancy may have been suffering from mental illness as well. This would explain her actions. irrational thinking that only she could "cure" Adam of his withdrawing at school; refusal to let the school help him (only she could), the very close co-dependent dynamics of their relationship. She relied on Adam and he relied on her. Adam surfed the net like any normal teen. Many times we can remember the most devastating parts of his disorder, yet we forget Adam has such brilliance in the mind.
It's likely Adam realized that his "world" was not the normal world of others. He remained sheltered for years in the house in CT with only his mother. His lack of understanding of the whole, jealousy for want of the "real world", projecting that anger at the only other person there, his mother. All this seems to collapse over a short time prior to the shootings. By shooting his mother several times in the face as she slept is an act almost that he wanted to completely destroy her. It's possible he felt his family had destroyed him. The lack of help for his disorders... Truly a computer whiz could research their own diagnosis and see the help available. I'm sure Adam's comprehension levels are fine.
Nancy may have had trouble giving Adam freedoms here and there as he is her "baby". Also he's the last one to leave the house and Menopause awaits or possibly occured. For some hormones can be outrageous.
Nancy should by all means be remembered as a victim of this whole tragedy.
It's very likely at the she was extremely overwhelmed to the point of suffering from mental illness herself. I see no mal-intent on Nancy's part. She didn't notice what normal sane folks would have, this due to her own illness.
Otherwise she would have gotten Adam help, and especially made sure the guns were locked away. Her irrationality at times and lack of doing these things shows that she herself was not completely sane.
Please give her a tombstone marker or cross #27
Nancy, a mother, carried too much weight to bear and insisted on doing so herself. Whether a mental illness prevented her from seeking help or a delusion that only a mother's love could fix, she is still a victim.
