Palin's 17-year-old daughter pregnant
Posted: 12:35 PM ET

From CNN Correspondent Dana Bash

Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol, second from the right, is pregnant.

ST. PAUL (CNN)- Bristol Palin, the 17 year old daughter of Sarah Palin, is pregnant and will keep the baby and marry the father, a senior McCain aide confirmed to CNN Monday.

McCain was aware of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy before he chose her mother for his running mate, the aide said.

“Senator McCain knew this and felt in no way did it disqualify her from being vice president,” said the aide.“Families have difficulties sometimes and lucky for her she has a supportive family.”

Bristol Palin, a senior in high school, is about 5 months along, in her second trimester, according to the aide.

The aide said they decided to reveal this information now because of rampant Internet rumors that Sarah Palin’s four month old baby, who has Down’s Syndrome, was actually Bristol’s.

“In the course of correcting that, we needed to get the truth out,” said the McCain aide.

In a statement from Sarah and Todd Palin, they said they were “proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents.”

They also asked the media to respect their daughter’s privacy.

The McCain aide insisted a key point to keep in mind is that Bristol decided to keep the baby, a decision “supported by her parents.”

At least she's taking responsibility for her actions and not having an abortion, like Obama's daughters will.

In picking a first-term governor with no foreign-policy record, the Republican presidential candidate undermined his own central themes - experience and national security - and exposed the deep fault lines within his campaign…But the pick is hard to square with what Republicans have been saying all week: that Obama is too green to be president. Because Obama has bared his soul in a bestselling memoir and his decisions have been under a microscope for the last four years, voters can assess his judgment. Palin, in contrast, has next to no track record. Her ticketmate would be the oldest first-term president ever and has had health troubles in the past. McCain, meanwhile, is struggling to accommodate Palin within the logic of his campaign, which up to now stressed an existential threat from Islamic fundamentalism.

Hey, teen pregnancy is something that happens. And when you are parents with careers, sometimes the values you'd like to teach your children will not always hit the mark.

Parenting can be extra tricky when you go back to work the day after your kid is born...

Anchorage Daily News:

It’s stunning that someone with so little national and international experience might be heartbeat away from the presidency.

Gov. Palin is a classic Alaska story. She is an example of the opportunity our state offers to those with talent, initiative and determination…

McCain picked Palin despite a recent blemish on her ethically pure resume. While she was governor, members of her family and staff tried to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from the Alaska State Troopers. Her public safety commissioner would not do so; she forced him out, supposedly for other reasons. While she runs for vice-president, the Legislature has an investigator on the case.

For all those advantages, Palin joins the ticket with one huge weakness: She’s a total beginner on national and international issues.

Gov. Palin will have to spend the next two months convincing Americans that she’s ready to be a heartbeat away from the presidency….

I think we're being a bit harsh with regard to Sarah Palin's experience or interest in foreign policy. George W. Bush had no more experience in international relations than Sarah Palin, and except for invading the wrong country, allowing Osama bin Laden to remain free, letting the Taliban regroup in Afghanistan, allowing the US dollar to lose its value, sinking the nation more and more heavily into debt with China, refusing to take serious action to curb global warming, and presiding over an astronomical increase in oil prices, has he really done that badly? I think Sarah Palin might be just as skillful (in the event of her assuming the presidency) as our current president.. What are we worried about?
